Calgary, Alberta: Student-athletes from across Central Alberta delivered an impressive performance at the 2026 School Sport Alberta Track and Field Provincial Championships, bringing home a combined 21 individual medals and two relay medals during a successful weekend of competition in Calgary.
Leading the way was Wetaskiwin standout Peyton Harquail, who captured three individual medals. Harquail won gold in the junior women’s triple jump with a leap of 11.35 metres and secured another gold in pole vault with a clearance of 2.30 metres. She also added a silver medal in the high jump after clearing 1.55 metres.
Red Deer’s Notre Dame High School enjoyed a strong championship showing, highlighted by Cody Mills, who claimed gold in the senior men’s 800 metres with a winning time of 1:55.86. Mills also earned bronze in the senior men’s 400 metres, finishing in 49.49 seconds.
Fellow Notre Dame athlete Harrison Grant captured gold in the men’s open 300-metre hurdles with a time of 39.36 seconds. Meanwhile, Amina Leon secured silver in the senior women’s high jump, while Anya Nel added another silver in the senior women’s pole vault.
Athletes from Lacombe Composite High School also produced several podium finishes. Zoe Harink won gold in the junior women’s discus with a throw of 30.44 metres and added bronze in shot put. Teammate Kara Adamson earned silver in the junior women’s javelin, while Rune Lee captured silver in the senior men’s discus. Logan Calihoo also finished second in the intermediate men’s 400 metres.
At Lindsay Thurber Comprehensive High School, Deveda Cook won two medals, earning silver in the intermediate 80-metre hurdles and bronze in the intermediate high jump. Cook also helped the Raiders’ intermediate girls’ 4×100-metre relay team capture silver alongside Claire Holliday, Berlyn Ogle and Sianna Freele.
Additional medal performances came from Reece Moberg, who won bronze in the junior women’s 3000 metres, and Grace Wright, who secured silver in the women’s open pentathlon. Bryce Davies added a bronze medal in the junior men’s high jump.
Elsewhere, Halyn Campeau earned silver in the intermediate girls’ high jump, while Jordan Steil captured silver in the senior men’s discus.
One of the championship highlights came from Noah Bendera of Ponoka’s St. Augustine Catholic School, who won gold in the senior men’s javelin with a throw of 50.34 metres.
The strong results underscore the depth of athletic talent across Central Alberta, with athletes from numerous communities earning provincial recognition and showcasing their skills on one of Alberta’s biggest high school sporting stages.
