Scottish Police Investigating Reports of Missing Athletes Following Commonwealth Games

GLASGOW, Scotland — Scottish police have launched investigations after receiving reports that several athletes were unaccounted for following the conclusion of the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

Police Scotland confirmed that inquiries are underway to determine the circumstances surrounding the missing athletes, while officials have begun coordinating with the UK Home Office as part of the investigation.

According to reports, four members of Uganda’s boxing team are believed to have gone missing before the national delegation departed for home. The athletes reportedly did not rejoin their teammates ahead of the team’s scheduled return to Uganda after the Games concluded.

Separate reports have also indicated that a boxer representing Pakistan has been reported missing following the tournament. Authorities have not officially released the identities of any of the athletes involved, and investigations remain ongoing.

In a statement, Police Scotland said it had received reports concerning several athletes who could not be accounted for after the Games and confirmed that officers are working to establish the facts surrounding each case.

Officials added that they are maintaining close communication with the UK Home Office while assessing the situation.

The 2026 Commonwealth Games welcomed nearly 3,000 athletes from 74 nations and territories, with Glasgow hosting one of the largest international sporting events of the year.

Games organizers emphasized that comprehensive security and immigration procedures were implemented throughout the event in cooperation with Police Scotland, Border Force, and UK immigration authorities to ensure athletes arrived and departed in accordance with legal requirements.

Commonwealth Games Chief Executive Phil Batty said organizers had worked closely with security and immigration agencies throughout the competition to provide a safe and secure environment for all participating athletes and officials.

Incidents involving athletes remaining in host countries after international sporting events are not unprecedented. Similar cases were reported following previous Commonwealth Games, including the 2014 Games in Glasgow and the 2018 edition on Australia’s Gold Coast, where a number of athletes sought asylum after the conclusion of the competition.

Authorities have not confirmed whether the current cases involve asylum claims or other circumstances, stressing that investigations remain in the early stages.

Police Scotland has not disclosed how many athletes are involved beyond describing the number as “several,” and officials have not announced whether any of those reported missing have since been located.

The investigations are expected to continue as law enforcement agencies work alongside immigration officials to establish the whereabouts of the athletes and determine the circumstances surrounding their disappearance after the Games.
