Red Deer’s Liam Gallagher Leads Team Canada to Gold at ISBHF 2026 Men’s Legends World Championship

Red Deer resident Liam Gallagher delivered a standout performance to help Team Canada capture the gold medal at the 2026 International Street and Ball Hockey Federation (ISBHF) Men’s Legends World Championship in Czechia.

Gallagher scored two goals, including the championship-winning goal, and added an assist as Canada defeated Slovakia 3-2 in a closely contested final to secure the world title.

The tournament was held in Černošice, Czechia, from July 28 to August 1 and featured veteran ball hockey players aged 45 and older from countries around the world. Gallagher emerged as one of Canada’s top performers throughout the competition, finishing with seven goals and five assists in eight games to lead the team offensively.

Reflecting on the victory, Gallagher said the emotions of winning the championship took time to fully sink in. He noted that celebrating with teammates from across Canada made the achievement even more meaningful before everyone returned home following the tournament.

Gallagher credited the experience as one he will always remember, describing the opportunity to represent Canada on the international stage as both an honour and a career highlight.

Away from the rink, Gallagher has worked as a fracturing coordinator with Calfrac Well Services for more than 16 years. Originally from Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, he grew up playing ice hockey before eventually relocating to Red Deer.

After stepping away from competitive hockey for several years, Gallagher rediscovered his passion for the sport through ball hockey, becoming an active competitor in Edmonton’s highly competitive leagues during the spring and summer seasons. He believes the strength of competition in Alberta has played a significant role in helping him develop the skills necessary to compete internationally.

Gallagher said regularly facing some of the country’s top players has kept his competitive edge sharp and provided the opportunity to earn a place on Team Canada.

He also praised the continued growth of ball and street hockey around the world, saying the sport is receiving increasing recognition for the dedication and athleticism displayed by its players. According to Gallagher, athletes competing at the international level invest considerable time in training and physical preparation to represent their countries.

He commended the organization of the Men’s Legends World Championship in Czechia, describing the event as professionally managed and an important step in raising the global profile of the sport.

Canada’s victory adds another international title to the country’s strong history in ball hockey, while Gallagher’s tournament-leading offensive performance played a crucial role in securing the championship. His contributions throughout the competition highlighted both his experience and consistency, culminating in the decisive performance during the gold medal game against Slovakia.

For Gallagher, bringing home a world championship represents not only a personal achievement but also recognition of the growing popularity and competitive standard of ball hockey in Canada. As interest in the sport continues to expand internationally, he hopes more athletes will have opportunities to compete at the highest level and help further elevate Canada’s reputation on the world stage.
