A Boeing 747-8 aircraft donated by Qatar and designated to serve as an interim Air Force One has emerged with a striking new American-themed paint scheme as it enters the final stages of modification for U.S. presidential transport duties.

The aircraft, previously operated by Qatar’s royal family, was recently photographed displaying a bold red, blue, white, and gold livery before flying to Joint Base Andrews in Maryland, where it will undergo final security and communications upgrades. The aircraft is expected to bridge the gap until Boeing delivers the delayed next-generation VC-25B Air Force One fleet.

The jumbo jet first appeared publicly in its new colors after aviation photographer Travis Ghormley captured images of the aircraft during a stop in Waco, Texas. The aircraft’s design features a white upper fuselage, a dark blue lower section, and red and gold stripes running along the body. A large American flag decorates the tail, while “United States of America” is prominently displayed on the fuselage.

The aircraft has spent several months undergoing modifications at L3Harris facilities in Greenville, Texas. The company is responsible for integrating secure communications systems, defensive technologies, and mission-critical equipment required for presidential travel.

Unlike the purpose-built VC-25B aircraft currently under development by Boeing, the interim aircraft is being prepared under a faster timeline. Officials have indicated that much of the luxury interior originally installed for the Qatari royal family will remain intact, while efforts have focused on essential security, communications, and safety upgrades necessary for government operations.

Experts say the accelerated conversion reflects growing concerns over repeated delays in Boeing’s Air Force One replacement program. The next-generation VC-25B aircraft are not expected to enter service until around 2028, forcing the U.S. Air Force to continue relying on the aging VC-25A fleet that has transported American presidents since the early 1990s.

The former royal aircraft is expected to support domestic presidential travel and other official missions, reducing pressure on the existing fleet. It will be housed in a newly constructed high-security hangar at Joint Base Andrews, reportedly built to accommodate larger aircraft and advanced maintenance requirements.

The donation and conversion project have attracted significant public attention, with supporters viewing the aircraft as a practical solution to Air Force One delays, while critics have raised questions about security, oversight, and the use of a previously foreign-operated aircraft for sensitive government missions.

Government specialists have conducted extensive inspections and evaluations to identify and eliminate any potential technical vulnerabilities before the aircraft enters service.

Reports suggest the aircraft could officially debut around July 4 during celebrations marking the 250th anniversary of American independence, although officials have not confirmed a specific timeline.

If the schedule remains on track, the aircraft’s transformation from a luxury royal transport into one of the most recognizable symbols of American presidential power will soon be complete, providing a temporary but highly visible addition to the United States’ executive airlift fleet.
