Canada Forever Unity Bus Tour Brings Message of National Unity to Lethbridge

LETHBRIDGE, Alberta — More than 150 residents gathered in Lethbridge over the weekend as the Canada Forever Unity Bus Tour made its latest stop, promoting a message of national unity and encouraging Albertans to remain engaged in discussions about the province’s future ahead of the planned October referendum.

The event, held in the parking lot of Tourism Lethbridge, brought together community members of all ages carrying Canadian and Alberta flags, while volunteers distributed hundreds of “Forever Canadian” lawn signs. Organizers described the gathering as a community event focused on unity and civic participation rather than a political rally.

Former Alberta cabinet minister and MLA Thomas Lukaszuk, who launched the Canada Forever campaign, addressed the crowd and emphasized the importance of preserving national unity despite political differences. He said the movement has grown through volunteer support across Alberta, with thousands of residents signing up to participate in the campaign.

Lukaszuk told attendees that the initiative is intended to demonstrate support for Canada in communities across the province amid growing debate over Alberta’s relationship with the rest of the country. He said volunteers have placed thousands of campaign signs throughout Alberta and plan to continue visiting communities in the months ahead.

Speaking to the audience, Lukaszuk stressed that being Canadian goes beyond birthplace or residence, describing it as an identity built on shared values and belonging. He encouraged Albertans to stay informed about the issues surrounding the upcoming referendum and to participate in the democratic process.

Lethbridge City Councillor Belinda Crowson also addressed the gathering, urging residents to vote in the October referendum and remain actively involved in provincial affairs. She encouraged citizens not to become complacent and questioned the financial cost of holding the referendum, suggesting those resources could instead be directed toward other provincial priorities.

The Canada Forever movement was formed in response to increasing public discussion surrounding Alberta separation and the provincial government’s decision to hold a referendum on the issue. Organizers say the campaign seeks to promote Canadian unity while encouraging respectful public dialogue.

During his remarks, Lukaszuk noted that a petition launched by the organization attracted hundreds of thousands of signatures. Although the provincial government did not adopt the proposed referendum wording advanced by the campaign, he said the movement has shifted its focus toward educating Albertans about the constitutional and legal realities surrounding any potential separation.

He explained that a referendum alone would not result in Alberta becoming an independent country. Instead, any move toward separation would involve a lengthy constitutional process requiring negotiations between provincial and federal governments, consideration of Indigenous treaty rights, and extensive legal and political discussions that could take years to complete.

Lukaszuk said many Albertans may not fully understand the complexity of such a process and encouraged people to research Canada’s history and constitutional framework before forming conclusions about separation.

He also expressed concern that ongoing debate over Alberta’s future could create economic uncertainty, potentially affecting investment and business confidence. Drawing on historical examples from previous sovereignty debates in Canada, he suggested that prolonged political uncertainty can have broader economic consequences.

Despite the political backdrop, Lukaszuk said his primary concern is preventing divisions within communities. He noted that political disagreements should not damage relationships among neighbours, friends, or families and called for respectful dialogue regardless of differing viewpoints.

Throughout the afternoon, attendees continued speaking with volunteers, collecting informational material and displaying both provincial and national flags while children and families participated in the community gathering.

The event took place under smoky skies caused by ongoing wildfire activity affecting parts of Alberta, but attendance remained steady as supporters gathered to hear speeches and discuss issues facing the province.

As Alberta moves closer to the October referendum, discussions surrounding the province’s future are expected to continue across communities. Organizers of the Canada Forever Unity Bus Tour say they will continue travelling throughout Alberta in an effort to encourage civic participation and promote dialogue focused on Canada’s future and national unity.
