Miami, Florida: A 22-year-old Alabama woman who lost both legs in a devastating accident during a cruise excursion in the Bahamas has filed a lawsuit against Carnival Cruise Line and the operators of the excursion, alleging negligence and unsafe practices that led to her life-changing injuries.
According to court documents and attorneys representing the victim, Hannah Smith, a recent summa cum laude graduate of Miles College, was seriously injured on May 12, 2025, while participating in the “Pearl Island Beach Escape with Lunch” excursion during a voyage aboard the Carnival Celebration.
Smith had embarked on the Caribbean cruise to celebrate her college graduation with a friend following years of academic achievement.
The lawsuit alleges that excursion staff overserved passengers alcohol and marijuana before the incident and failed to maintain adequate safety procedures. Her legal team argues that negligent actions by those responsible for the excursion directly contributed to the catastrophic accident.
According to preliminary findings cited in the lawsuit, the tragedy occurred after the excursion vessel returned to Nassau. As passengers began disembarking from a catamaran-style boat alongside a pier, Smith was involved in an accident that reportedly resulted in contact with the vessel’s propeller.
The injuries were severe, ultimately leading to the amputation of both of her legs.
Attorneys claim the excursion was marketed and sold directly through Carnival Cruise Line’s website and onboard excursion platform, with payments processed by the cruise company. The lawsuit contends that Carnival bears responsibility for promoting and facilitating the excursion while allegedly failing to ensure adequate safety standards.
Smith has since undergone extensive medical treatment and rehabilitation following the accident. Despite the life-altering injuries, she has publicly shared her recovery journey and recently spoke at a trauma survivors’ event in Florida.
The lawsuit seeks damages related to medical expenses, pain and suffering, loss of future earnings, and other losses stemming from the accident.
Neither Carnival Cruise Line nor the excursion operators had publicly responded in detail to the allegations at the time of reporting. The claims contained in the lawsuit have yet to be tested in court.
The case is expected to draw significant attention within the cruise industry as questions are raised about excursion safety, operator oversight, and passenger protection during shore activities.
