Drivers in Calgary are being urged to watch their speed as photo radar enforcement focuses on nine communities across the city throughout November, with additional monitoring planned in construction zones where workers are present.

The City of Calgary has identified Altadore, Auburn Bay, Cambrian Heights, Glamorgan, Glenbrook, Patterson, Silver Springs, Varsity and Wildwood as the priority communities for mobile photo radar enforcement this month.

The enforcement initiative is part of the city’s ongoing efforts to improve road safety and reduce collisions, particularly in residential neighbourhoods and areas where speeding creates risks for pedestrians, cyclists and other motorists.

Photo radar vehicles will also be deployed in active construction zones where workers are on site, reinforcing the need for drivers to reduce their speed and remain alert when travelling through roadwork areas.

In addition to mobile photo radar operations, Calgary has 57 Intersection Safety Camera locations across the city. These stationary cameras are designed primarily to detect vehicles running red lights.

Five of the 57 intersection cameras are also equipped to record speed-on-green violations, meaning motorists can receive tickets for exceeding the posted speed limit while travelling through an intersection even when the traffic signal is green.

Authorities have also reminded drivers that speeding more than 50 kilometres per hour above the posted limit requires an appearance before a judge rather than being handled through the usual ticket-payment process.

The locations selected for photo radar enforcement are identified through statistical analysis, collision information and concerns raised by residents about traffic safety in their communities.

When a speeding violation is recorded, the offence notice or violation ticket is mailed to the registered owner of the vehicle. Recipients must follow the instructions on the ticket to pay the fine or address the matter through the appropriate provincial court process before the specified deadline.

Calgary Police Service operates mobile photo radar vehicles as part of its Automated Traffic Enforcement programme. The system is intended to address speeding concerns in locations where traffic enforcement is considered important for protecting public safety.

With enforcement concentrated in nine communities and active construction areas during November, Calgary motorists are being reminded to follow posted speed limits, pay attention to changing road conditions and exercise additional caution in residential streets and work zones.
