CALGARY, Alberta: A Calgary school brought students, educators and the wider community together on Friday to celebrate Islamic History Month through a vibrant cultural heritage fair highlighting the diversity of Muslim communities and their traditions.
The Calgary Islamic School hosted the special event, transforming its gymnasium into an interactive exhibition featuring displays that reflected different cultures, backgrounds and traditions from across the Muslim world.
Students worked on the heritage fair throughout October, preparing presentations and interactive displays to showcase their cultural identities and explain how their individual backgrounds connect with Islamic values and teachings.
The event provided students with an opportunity to share their heritage, celebrate their diversity and strengthen understanding of the multicultural nature of Islam.
Teacher Umaiman Samari said the initiative aimed to help visitors recognize that Muslims come from diverse cultural backgrounds and bring a wide range of personal stories and experiences to their faith.
She emphasized that Islam is a multicultural religion that welcomes people from all backgrounds, adding that the school hoped visitors would leave with a greater appreciation of the diversity within the Muslim community.
Grade 8 student Nuaym Ahmed also highlighted the importance of the event, explaining that it allowed students to express their identities and demonstrate how their cultural backgrounds connect with Islamic teachings.
He said the project helped students explain how Islamic principles influence their everyday lives while allowing them to share their heritage with others.
Islamic History Month is observed across Canada every October. The Canadian Parliament officially proclaimed October as Islamic History Month in 2007 to recognize the historical contributions, achievements and cultural heritage of Muslims in Canada and around the world.
The Calgary Islamic School’s heritage fair served as an opportunity to promote cultural awareness, encourage dialogue and celebrate the rich diversity of Muslim communities.
Through student participation and interactive learning, the celebration highlighted the importance of understanding different cultural traditions while recognizing the shared values that bring communities together.
