EDMONTON, Alberta: A 17-year-old boy was killed in a serious two-vehicle collision on Sherwood Park Freeway on Sunday morning, November 1, prompting police to close part of the roadway while investigators examined the scene.

According to the Edmonton Police Service (EPS), the collision occurred at approximately 10 a.m. on a section of the freeway between 50 Street and 34 Street.

Police said a Ford Ranger pickup truck, driven by a 17-year-old boy, crossed into the westbound lanes, where it collided with a Nissan SUV.

Emergency Medical Services (EMS) responded to the scene. However, the 17-year-old passenger travelling in the Ford Ranger was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the pickup truck and the driver of the Nissan SUV were transported to hospital as a precaution. Police did not immediately provide further details about their conditions.

Investigators said speed and alcohol were not considered contributing factors in the collision.

The incident occurred amid challenging weather conditions across parts of Alberta. Environment Canada had issued a fog advisory for portions of central and eastern Alberta, which remained in effect into Sunday afternoon.

Hoar frost was also present in the area as temperatures remained below freezing, creating potentially hazardous conditions for motorists.

Edmonton Police Service Sgt. Timothy Connell expressed condolences to the family and friends of the teenager who lost his life.

In a statement, Connell said the tragic incident highlighted how quickly winter road conditions can change, urging motorists to remain cautious and look out for one another while travelling.

Police closed the affected section of Sherwood Park Freeway during the investigation, causing disruptions for Sunday morning motorists.

The tragedy serves as another reminder for drivers across Edmonton and surrounding communities to exercise extra caution during the winter season, maintain safe distances and adjust their driving to changing road and weather conditions.
