KYIV — Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has declared his support for a mutual energy ceasefire announced by U.S. President Donald Trump, even as Russian forces continued to strike Ukraine’s power grid on Sunday.

“Ukraine always FULLY supports steps toward de-escalation, the protection of lives, and the decisions needed to end the war and guarantee lasting peace,” Zelenskyy posted on social media.

Despite the agreement, Zelenskyy reported in his evening address that Russian attacks were ongoing. He noted that Ukrainian skies remained “infested” with Russian Shahed drones and that glide bombs had targeted energy infrastructure in both Kyiv and Kharkiv. The Ukrainian presidential office confirmed that a power plant in Kharkiv was struck shortly after Trump’s ceasefire declaration.

Trump announced the abrupt ceasefire Sunday morning on Truth Social, stating it was “effective immediately” and that both nations had agreed. “Do not break it!” he wrote. The White House has not yet clarified the president’s post or provided additional details on the terms.

Zelenskyy confirmed he is awaiting further information from Washington and has already discussed the proposed ceasefire with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, Finnish President Alexander Stubb, and NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte. “Ukraine supports the ceasefire,” Zelenskyy said. “And it is important that Russia support it as well.”

The announcement follows Zelenskyy’s recent appearance on ABC’s This Week, where he offered to halt Ukrainian drone strikes on Russian oil refineries if Moscow stopped bombing Ukraine’s energy system, explicitly asking Trump to pressure the Kremlin to accept the deal.

The weekend’s diplomatic developments were preceded by sudden political friction. On Saturday, Trump publicly blamed Zelenskyy for rising global diesel prices and suggested it was time for Ukraine to elect new leadership. In response, Zelenskyy countered that Ukraine would gladly hold presidential elections—which are currently prohibited under the martial law enacted during the 2022 invasion—if Russia agreed to a broader 60-day ceasefire to allow safe voting.
