ADELAIDE, Australia: Australia has received its first Michelin-starred restaurants, with 11 dining establishments in South Australia earning international recognition in a landmark moment for the country’s culinary industry.

Magill Estate Restaurant in Adelaide’s eastern suburbs was the only venue to receive two Michelin stars, while 10 other restaurants across the state earned one star each. The recognition places South Australia on the global fine-dining map and is expected to strengthen its appeal as a destination for food lovers and international visitors.

The announcement marks a significant development more than a century after the Michelin Guide was first published in France. Despite previous efforts to introduce the prestigious restaurant guide across Australia, the country had remained outside its international network.

South Australia secured its own arrangement after attempts to persuade the guide’s operators to expand nationally failed to produce an agreement. According to reports, the state government funded visits by Michelin’s anonymous inspectors, making it possible for local restaurants to be assessed.

The government has not publicly disclosed the cost of the initiative, but Tourism Minister Emily Bourke defended the investment, saying it would help establish South Australia as a recognised tourism destination and raise its profile internationally.

The move reflects growing competition among destinations seeking to attract international travellers through food, wine and premium hospitality experiences. South Australia, already known for its wine regions and culinary offerings, hopes the recognition will encourage visitors to explore destinations beyond the country’s largest cities.

The expansion follows the Michelin Guide’s arrival in New Zealand, which became the first destination in Oceania to be included in the guide in July. New Zealand agreed to pay NZ$6.3 million over three years for its inclusion, according to reports.

Founded by brothers André and Édouard Michelin in 1900, the guide was initially designed to encourage motorists to travel by providing information on accommodation, restaurants and road journeys. The idea was to increase demand for cars and, in turn, tyres.

Over time, the publication developed into one of the world’s most influential authorities on restaurant quality. Michelin stars, introduced in 1926, have become a coveted distinction for chefs and dining establishments seeking international recognition.

One star recognises high-quality cooking, two stars indicate excellent cuisine worth taking a detour to experience, and three stars are reserved for exceptional cooking considered worthy of a special journey.

Although South Australia’s first selection does not include a three-star restaurant, the two-star award for Magill Estate Restaurant represents the highest distinction achieved in the state’s inaugural group.

The one-star recipients showcase a variety of dining experiences, from contemporary Australian cuisine to restaurants highlighting regional produce and traditional cooking techniques.

Arkhé, located in Norwood, is recognised for its focus on open-fire cooking, while Aptos in Stirling offers tasting menus that feature native Australian ingredients. Other recognised venues are spread across Adelaide and South Australia’s celebrated wine-producing regions.

The complete list of Australia’s inaugural Michelin-starred restaurants is as follows.

Two Michelin stars

Magill Estate Restaurant, Rosslyn Park

One Michelin star

Anvers Restaurant, Kangarilla

Maxwell Restaurant, McLaren Vale

Botanic, Adelaide

Arkhé, Norwood

Esmay, Adelaide

Aurora at ILA, Adelaide

Hentley Farm, Seppeltsfield

LVN Restaurant at Bird in Hand, Woodside

Aptos, Stirling

Skillogalee Barrel House, Sevenhill

Beyond the starred establishments, the wider South Australian guide includes more than 70 additional restaurants. Some have been recognised in the Bib Gourmand category, which highlights venues offering good-quality food at more accessible prices.

The broader selection is intended to showcase the diversity of South Australia’s food scene, giving visitors options ranging from premium tasting menus to more affordable dining experiences.

For the state’s tourism sector, the recognition could provide an important marketing advantage. Michelin stars are widely associated with culinary excellence and can influence where international travellers choose to eat, stay and spend their holidays.

The long-term impact will depend on whether the recognition translates into increased visitor numbers, stronger restaurant bookings and wider economic benefits for local businesses. However, the inaugural awards have already given South Australia a distinction no other Australian state currently holds.

With 11 restaurants recognised in its first selection, South Australia has established a new chapter in Australia’s fine-dining story and strengthened its ambition to become a leading destination for food, wine and hospitality.
