Red Deer, Alberta: A major multi-jurisdictional investigation led by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police Crime Reduction Team in Red Deer has resulted in multiple arrests, the recovery of stolen vehicles, the seizure of firearms, and dozens of criminal charges against several suspects across central Alberta.
The investigation began on April 17 when the Red Deer RCMP Crime Reduction Team launched an inquiry into allegations involving possession of property obtained by crime. The operation quickly expanded across several communities and involved support from Sylvan Lake RCMP, Sundre RCMP, Rocky Mountain House RCMP, Olds RCMP, RCMP Police Dog Services, the Alberta RCMP Real Time Operations Centre and Alberta RCMP Air Services.
Investigators traced suspects to a residence in the community of Caroline on April 22. Police said a suspect attempted to evade officers after spotting uniformed members, driving erratically and forcing police to discontinue an immediate stop due to safety concerns.
The vehicle was later located in Benalto and was confirmed to have been stolen from Calgary. Two suspects were subsequently arrested at a residence in Benalto.
A 43-year-old man from Caroline now faces 22 criminal charges, including seven counts of possession of property obtained by crime exceeding $5,000, fraudulent concealment, possession of a prohibited or restricted firearm with ammunition, and dangerous operation of a motor vehicle.
A 34-year-old woman from Caroline was charged with possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000 and fraudulent concealment. Police said she failed to appear in court on May 22, resulting in an arrest warrant being issued.
As the investigation progressed, officers executed a search warrant at another Caroline property, where they seized a sawed-off shotgun, ammunition, and tools commonly associated with vehicle theft operations.
On April 23, RCMP officers observed a vehicle believed to have been stolen from Red Deer operating in the city’s Pines neighbourhood. Police arrested both occupants.
A 39-year-old Red Deer resident, Ryan Schweitzer, was charged with nine offences, including impaired operation of a motor vehicle, dangerous driving, possession of a controlled substance, and operating a vehicle while prohibited. A 38-year-old man from Rocky Mountain House was also issued a violation ticket for driving while unauthorized.
Further investigations led officers to two rural properties in the Sundre area on April 28. There, police recovered multiple stolen vehicles reported from several Alberta communities and discovered evidence suggesting vehicle identification numbers (VINs) had been altered.
A 40-year-old resident of Mountain View County has been charged with multiple offences, including possession of stolen property, drug trafficking-related offences, fraudulent concealment, possession of ammunition contrary to a court order, and tampering with vehicle identification numbers. He is scheduled to appear in court in Sundre on June 9.
A 26-year-old man from Rocky Mountain House was also charged with possession of a controlled substance, possession of stolen property, fraudulent concealment, possession of unmarked cigarettes, and operating an uninsured vehicle.
Police say the investigation highlights the effectiveness of coordinated law enforcement efforts across multiple jurisdictions.
In a statement, RCMP noted that the arrests and seizures demonstrate how police agencies can work together to disrupt organized criminal activity, recover stolen property, and improve public safety throughout central Alberta.
