Kananaskis, Alberta (April 17, 2026) — The family of a 15-year-old boy who died following an avalanche at Nakiska Ski Area says the resort’s silence in the weeks since the tragedy has added to their grief.

Emilio Hrazdira died in hospital on Feb. 28, one day after being fully buried in an avalanche in the Monster Glades area of the resort. A second teenager was partially buried in the same incident but survived.

His father, Filip Hrazdira, says neither the ski hill nor its parent company, Resorts of the Canadian Rockies, has reached out to the family since the incident.

“I think out of this whole thing, it’s perhaps the most hurtful part,” he said, expressing frustration over the lack of communication. “Not a condolence, not an apology. We haven’t heard anything about the investigation.”

Family Seeks Transparency on Safety Measures

The family is now calling for greater transparency regarding the conditions on the day of the avalanche and the safety protocols in place. They are asking key questions about why the terrain was open and what preventative steps were taken to reduce avalanche risk.

They also want to know what changes will be made moving forward to ensure a similar tragedy does not happen again.

Investigation Timeline Unclear

While a statement released shortly after the incident indicated that a full investigation was underway, no updates have been publicly shared. Requests for comment from media outlets have gone unanswered.

Experts note that internal resort investigations can often be completed within weeks, though public disclosure may take longer. Meanwhile, Avalanche Canada says it currently has no additional information and cannot conduct a formal incident analysis until the legal time frame for potential lawsuits has passed.

Despite the lack of updates from the resort, an independent investigation appears to be progressing, with reports indicating that third-party experts have been granted access to the site to gather information on behalf of the surviving victim’s family.

Remembering a Promising Young Skier

Emilio was described by his family as an energetic and passionate skier who loved exploring the mountains. A member of the Lake Louise Ski Club, he dreamed of one day competing at the Olympic level.

His family is now working to honour his legacy through memorial events and initiatives that reflect his passion for skiing and life.

“He inspired everyone to be better,” his father said.
