Police say a weapon-related incident at Mount Royal University was safely resolved Monday afternoon after a rapid response from officers.
At approximately 2:45 p.m. on April 13, 2026, authorities responded to reports of an individual carrying a large knife on campus, located at 4825 Mount Royal Gate S.W. in Calgary. Police quickly secured the area and, after confirming witness reports, issued a shelter-in-place order for the university and nearby communities as a precaution.
During the investigation, officers determined the individual was a university staff member working as a chef. Once this information was verified, the shelter-in-place order was lifted, and officials confirmed there was no ongoing threat to public safety.
Darren Smith from the Calgary Police Service Real Time Operations Centre said the response demonstrated how seriously officers treat reports of potential danger. He noted that police acted swiftly to protect the campus and surrounding area, even though the situation was later deemed non-threatening.
One man was taken into custody at the scene, and police say the investigation remains ongoing, with charges still possible.
In a statement, Mount Royal University thanked police for their quick response and acknowledged the stress the incident caused students and staff. Officials expressed relief that the situation ended safely and without harm.
Authorities also thanked the public and university community for their cooperation during the incident.
