District 6 members have charged a man who is believed to be responsible for the theft of more than $46,000 worth of construction equipment and tools from a job site in the city’s southeast.
Last week, officers responded to reports of a break and enter with property taken from a job site located at 6127 Barlow Trail S.E. The break-in occurred between 2:30 p.m., Thursday, April 23, 2026, and 7 a.m., Friday, April 24, 2026. It is believed an unknown man had caused extensive damage inside the job site, including tampering with CCTV equipment and spray-painting graffiti before stealing tools and fleeing the area in a truck that is believed to have been stolen from the same site.
After reviewing CCTV footage from neighbouring businesses, two men were seen transporting the stolen items north of 61 Avenue S.E. While canvassing the area, officers located a large bin and a Dewalt 60V brushless snowblower that had been hidden in trees nearby. The items were returned to the rightful owners.
Police continued their search and located the stolen truck at 5910 50 Ave. S.E., near an encampment area.
On Tuesday, April 28, 2026, at approximately 1:30 p.m., officers encountered an unknown man near the recovered stolen vehicle who appeared to match the description of one of the suspects. He was also in possession of a large knife and was arrested without incident.
As a result, Vaughn Gregory WINNICHUK, 42, is charged with one count each of possession of stolen property under $5,000 and failure to comply with a release order.
WINNICHUK is scheduled to next appear in court on Wednesday, May 6, 2026.
“Break and enters at job sites can have a significant impact on businesses and workers, often resulting in lost revenue, missing equipment and delays in important work,” says Staff Sergeant Joe Hebert of the Calgary Police Service District 6 General Investigations Unit. “We are grateful for the assistance of the local business community in helping us advance this investigation that resulted in an arrest and property returned to rightful owners.”
The investigation is ongoing and police continue to search for the second suspect.
