Illegal Dumping in Calgary Raises Safety Concerns, City Urges Residents to Act

Illegal dumping continues to impact communities across Calgary, with city officials warning of growing safety risks and increasing strain on municipal resources.

The practice, which includes abandoning furniture, appliances, renovation debris and household waste on public or private property without permission, is prohibited under city bylaws. Offenders can face fines of up to $10,000.

Rising Concern in Communities

According to City of Calgary officials, the issue has intensified in recent years, particularly in northeast neighbourhoods.

Deputy Chief of Community Safety Damian Cole said illegal dumping is more than just an eyesore.

“It creates real safety risks and pulls City crews away from other essential work,” he noted, adding that each reported incident diverts resources from core services residents depend on.

Health and Safety Risks

Dumped waste can lead to multiple hazards, including:

• Attraction of pests
• Increased fire risks
• Unsafe conditions in parks, alleys and public spaces

Officials say these impacts place an unfair burden on local residents, who are often left dealing with the aftermath.

Free Cleanup Events Launch

To help address the issue, the City is supporting Community Cleanup events running from April 25 through September. These events provide residents with a free option to dispose of large household items that cannot fit in regular garbage carts.

Organized in partnership with community groups, the initiative aims to reduce illegal dumping while promoting responsible waste disposal.

Legal Disposal Options Available

Residents are encouraged to use proper disposal methods, including:

• Cart and bin collection: For everyday waste, recycling and compost
• Eco Centres: For bulky items such as furniture and construction materials (fees may apply)
• Private junk removal services: For large loads or when transport is not available

The City also offers an online tool to help residents determine the correct way to dispose of specific items.

Reporting Illegal Dumping

Authorities urge residents to report illegal dumping incidents promptly through the 311 service, either by phone, app or online.

Providing details such as location, photos and vehicle licence plates can assist investigations and speed up cleanup efforts.

Shared Responsibility

City officials stress that maintaining clean and safe neighbourhoods requires community involvement.

“Proper disposal shows respect for your neighbours and shared spaces,” Cole said, emphasizing that responsible actions from residents play a key role in keeping Calgary livable for everyone.
