ERIE, Pa. — A devastating mass shooting in an Erie home on Friday claimed the lives of eight victims, including a pregnant woman and two young children, before the 45-year-old gunman took his own life. Authorities have identified the shooter as the grandfather and patriarch of the family, leaving a grieving community searching for answers.
Julius Windham, whose one-year-old daughter Amarianna was among the victims, visited a makeshift memorial outside the home on Sunday. The slain included Amarianna, her pregnant mother, the mother’s five-year-old son, and her unborn baby.
“I think that was a front for him,” Windham said, wearing a memorial T-shirt bearing the words Forever In My Heart. “Him every day, him smiling… you would think nothing like that would happen. Words can’t even explain what I’m going through right now. But I gotta be strong for my community… my family, my daughters, my sons, everybody.”
While police have not released the names of the shooter or the victims, Erie Police Chief Rick Lorah confirmed the gunman was related to seven of the deceased. The eighth victim was a friend of the pregnant woman.
According to investigators, video and audio evidence captured muffled gunshots from inside the residence shortly before 5 p.m. on Friday. Two distressed women subsequently arrived and began pounding on the door. The gunman emerged, fatally shot both women as they ran toward him, and retreated inside.
Responding officers deployed a drone and a robot before entering the home. Inside, they discovered the bodies of the five-year-old boy and one-year-old girl on the first floor. Two women and two young men were found dead in a stairwell, and the shooter was located on the second floor.
“Out of respect for the victims and the families, I will not discuss the details of what our officers encountered inside that home,” Chief Lorah stated during a weekend news conference. He declined to establish a definitive motive but indicated mental health may have been a contributing factor. Investigators are currently examining the cellphones of the two women killed outside the home, noting they appeared to know something was wrong prior to their arrival at the property.
Longtime family friends expressed shock at the sudden violence. Nicole Eller noted the shooter “was a good guy, and then he started going downhill with everything,” while Debra Eller added, “They were a lovely family. Who would have thought this would ever happen? … His grandchildren, his kids, how can you do that?”
Addressing the shattered community, Erie Mayor Daria Devlin offered condolences directly to the surviving relatives. “I am so deeply sorry. What happened to you was horrific, and there is nothing that any of us can say today that will make this any easier. Our entire community is with you, we’re grieving with you. And we are here to support you.”
