Downtown Calgary is set for an exciting and energetic summer as The City of Calgary and several community partners launch a series of free sports and recreation programs designed to bring families, youth, and soccer fans together in the city’s core.
The summer initiative will feature basketball clinics, soccer programming, and outdoor FIFA World Cup watch parties, transforming public spaces into vibrant gathering places where Calgarians can connect, play, and celebrate.
Free Programs to Activate Calgary’s Downtown
The 2026 lineup includes three major initiatives:
- SURGE CITY Hoops Summer Series
- Soccer City FC – Presented by Cavalry FC and Calgary Wild FC
- World Cup Watch Parties, supported by the Calgary Minor Soccer Association
City officials say the programs are part of Calgary’s ongoing Downtown Strategy to create safe, welcoming, and lively public spaces for residents and visitors.
“Free, accessible recreation helps activate downtown and brings people into our public spaces,” said Thom Mahler, Director of Downtown Strategy with The City of Calgary.
SURGE CITY Hoops Returns to Century Gardens
Following the success of last year’s program, the SURGE CITY Hoops Summer Series will return with expanded basketball clinics for youth ages 8 to 17.
Led by players and coaches from the Calgary Surge, the free clinics will take place at Century Gardens from June 2 to September 12.
Schedule:
- Tuesdays and Thursdays: 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.
- Saturdays: 10 a.m. to noon
The popular SURGE CITY 3-on-3 tournament will also return in September.
More than 1,000 young people participated in the program in 2025, with 80 percent of surveyed families saying the initiative made downtown Calgary feel more welcoming and engaging.
Soccer City FC Debuts at Peace Park
A new addition for 2026, Soccer City FC will offer free soccer sessions for youth ages 8 to 17 at Peace Park.
The program will run most Sundays from June 7 to September 2, from 10 a.m. to noon.
Participants will receive coaching and mentorship from Cavalry FC, Calgary Wild FC, and Calgary Minor Soccer Association.
“This is a special moment for our club and our city,” said Mason Trafford, Commercial Director of Cavalry FC.
Calgary Wild FC President and CEO Lara Murphy added that the program will help inspire the next generation of players while making sport more accessible to all youth.
Outdoor World Cup Watch Parties
As Canada prepares to co-host the 2026 FIFA Men’s World Cup, downtown Calgary will host free outdoor watch parties where fans can gather to cheer for Team Canada.
Watch Party Locations and Dates:
- Eau Claire Plaza – June 12, June 18, and June 24
- Stephen Avenue – July 19 (World Cup Final)
The family-friendly events will include entertainment, activities, and community celebrations.
Building Community Through Sport
The programs are supported by numerous organizations, including the Centre for Newcomers, Tourism Calgary, and the Calgary Downtown Association.
Since 2022, Calgary’s Downtown Strategy has delivered more than 2,000 days of programming to revitalize the city centre, boost foot traffic, and support local businesses.
These initiatives also align with Calgary’s GamePLAN strategy, which promotes inclusive, low-barrier access to recreation and community activities.
