Calgary Mayor Jeromy Farkas has signed a memorandum of understanding with the Calgary Nonprofit Chamber aimed at creating a more structured relationship between city leadership and the organizations serving communities across the city.

The agreement, described as the first of its kind in Canada, was signed Wednesday at Historic City Hall. Although the memorandum is not legally binding, it establishes a framework for regular communication and cooperation between the mayor’s office and Calgary’s nonprofit and charitable organizations.

Farkas said the agreement will provide more consistent opportunities for city officials and nonprofit leaders to discuss issues affecting Calgarians and explore areas where they can work together.

The memorandum is expected to create regular engagement with local charities and community organizations, allowing them to raise emerging concerns and contribute to discussions around municipal policies and priorities.

The agreement will also provide a formal structure for collaboration on issues where the city and nonprofit sector share common goals. Supporters say stronger coordination could help ensure that community organizations have a meaningful role in discussions about challenges facing residents.

The Calgary Nonprofit Chamber represents organizations working across a wide range of areas, including social services, community development and other programs that support residents.

Under the agreement, the relationship will be reviewed annually, allowing both sides to assess how the partnership is working and identify areas where cooperation can be improved.

The initiative comes as Calgary’s nonprofit organizations continue to play an important role in responding to community needs. Many charities and nonprofit groups work directly with residents and are often among the first organizations to see the impact of rising costs, housing pressures and other social challenges.

The new framework is intended to give those organizations a more regular opportunity to bring their experiences and concerns directly into conversations with municipal leadership.

City officials and nonprofit representatives gathered at City Hall for the signing, alongside members of Calgary’s broader nonprofit community.

The agreement does not create legal obligations for either side, but it signals an effort to establish a more coordinated approach to communication between municipal government and the organizations working on the ground in Calgary communities.

The annual review will provide an opportunity to evaluate the partnership and determine whether additional measures are needed to improve cooperation.

For Calgary’s nonprofit sector, the memorandum creates a formal channel for ongoing dialogue with the mayor’s office, while city leadership gains a more direct connection with organizations that regularly interact with residents and community groups across the city.
