Canada’s Conservatives are calling on the federal government to increase domestic diesel production and temporarily eliminate federal taxes on the fuel as prices continue to rise across the country.

Conservative MPs are proposing that Canada set a target of producing one million barrels of diesel per day, arguing that stronger domestic supply could help protect consumers and businesses from international energy disruptions.

Diesel prices have climbed significantly in recent months amid disruptions to global oil markets linked to conflicts in Iran and Ukraine. Statistics Canada data showed that average diesel prices across the country in August were between 60 and 90 cents per litre higher than they were a year earlier.

Conservative energy critic Carol Anstey said the impact of higher diesel prices extends well beyond fuel stations. She argued that increased transportation and production costs eventually affect food prices, construction expenses and household budgets.

The Conservatives are putting a motion before the House of Commons calling for the federal government to suspend federal taxes on diesel until Canada Day.

The proposal also seeks tax incentives for investments in diesel infrastructure, including pipelines, refineries, rail transportation facilities and storage capacity.

The party argues that Canada has the natural resources, skilled workforce and technical expertise needed to strengthen its domestic fuel supply. Conservatives say expanding infrastructure could create employment, reduce reliance on foreign suppliers and provide greater protection against international supply disruptions.

However, Canada’s refining industry is already operating close to its existing capacity, creating questions about how quickly production could be increased.

A report from the Canada Energy Regulator earlier this year found that Canadian crude oil refineries were processing approximately 1.6 million barrels per day, representing about 90 per cent of total refining capacity.

Government officials have also pushed back against concerns about Canada’s domestic diesel supply.

John Fragos, press secretary to Finance Minister Francois Philippe Champagne, said the federal government remains in regular contact with refiners and that companies are already maximizing diesel production in response to market conditions.

Fragos said Canada currently produces roughly the same amount of diesel as it consumes domestically, providing the country with a degree of supply security.

Canada is also currently a net exporter of diesel, meaning production beyond domestic demand is being shipped to international markets.

The Conservative proposal comes as fuel prices remain a major concern for households, farmers, truck operators, manufacturers and other businesses that depend heavily on diesel.

Supporters of the motion argue that temporary tax relief could provide immediate assistance while greater investment in domestic infrastructure could strengthen Canada’s energy security over the longer term.

The federal government, however, faces the challenge of balancing consumer relief with the realities of Canada’s existing refining capacity and the broader international energy market.

As global oil and fuel markets remain vulnerable to geopolitical disruptions, the debate over domestic production, taxation and Canada’s energy infrastructure is expected to remain a significant issue in Parliament.
