Calgary: Calgary City Council has approved an updated Water Efficiency Plan aimed at safeguarding long-term water supply, reducing system losses, and introducing a structured, year-round lawn and landscape watering schedule.

The plan is part of the city’s broader strategy to ensure reliable water access for households, businesses, and essential services as Calgary continues to grow.

Long-term goal: 20% reduction by 2040

The updated framework sets an ambitious target to reduce overall water consumption by 20 percent by 2040. It builds on decades of conservation efforts and focuses on improving efficiency across the entire water system.

City officials say the plan is designed to reduce pressure on aging infrastructure, better manage demand, and protect natural water sources, including regional rivers.

Focus on infrastructure and water loss

A major component of the plan is reducing water loss through system improvements. Key measures include:

  • Proactive leak detection and repair programs
  • Renewal of aging pipes and infrastructure
  • Modernization of water meters for accurate monitoring
  • Use of data-driven tools to guide operations and investment

These steps aim to improve system performance while minimizing waste.

New year-round watering schedule introduced

To address peak summer demand, Council has approved a structured watering schedule for lawns and landscapes.

The new system includes:

  • Sprinkler and irrigation use allowed up to three days per week
  • Even-numbered addresses: Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday
  • Odd-numbered addresses: Wednesday, Friday, Sunday
  • Recommended watering times: late evening, overnight, and early morning

Officials note that outdoor watering can increase water demand by up to 40 percent during summer, making it a key area for conservation.

Exemptions will apply for trees, food gardens, and newly planted landscapes.

Education-first approach

The City plans to prioritize public awareness and education as residents adapt to the new system. Incentives, such as programs for rain barrels and water-saving tools, will also support households in reducing usage.

Authorities emphasized that watering schedules differ from water restrictions, which are temporary and enforced during shortages.

Protecting future supply

The updated Water Efficiency Plan underscores Calgary’s commitment to sustainability and long-term resource management. Officials say small, everyday conservation efforts by residents will play a crucial role in preserving water availability.
