The Town of Gibsons on British Columbia’s Sunshine Coast has issued an apology following concerns raised by a Harry Potter-themed Halloween display installed in a municipal park, acknowledging that the popular fictional series has become a sensitive issue for many people, particularly members of the transgender community.

The controversy emerged after the town shared photographs of the Halloween display on October 24, praising its parks department for creating the themed attraction. However, the display prompted concerns among some community members, leading municipal officials to address the issue publicly.

On Sunday, November 1, the Town of Gibsons published an apology, recognizing that the Harry Potter franchise carries different meanings for different people because of its author’s public statements and actions concerning transgender issues.

In its statement, the town acknowledged that the Harry Potter series has become a difficult subject for many, particularly transgender individuals. Officials said the display was intended to provide a fun Halloween experience but recognized that its theme could cause hurt or discomfort within the community.

The municipality apologized to those who felt affected by the display and said it would take the feedback into consideration when making future decisions.

The controversy highlights the continuing debate surrounding the Harry Potter franchise and its creator, J.K. Rowling, whose public comments and positions on transgender-related issues have generated widespread criticism and discussion.

A similar controversy unfolded in Vancouver last year when the Vancouver Park Board faced criticism over its decision to host Harry Potter: A Forbidden Forest Experience in Stanley Park.

The attraction was expected to generate hundreds of thousands of dollars in revenue for the city. Despite public criticism, the event proceeded as planned. However, the park board unanimously approved a motion expressing regret over its decision to host the attraction and apologizing for the harm caused to transgender, gender-diverse and Two-Spirit people and their communities.

The motion reaffirmed the board’s commitment to transgender lives and rights, reflecting concerns that the commercial promotion of the Harry Potter franchise could be hurtful to members of the transgender community.

The latest apology from Gibsons adds to a broader discussion about public institutions, community inclusion and the responsibility of municipalities to consider how cultural themes and public displays may affect different groups.

While the Halloween installation was intended as a seasonal attraction, the town’s response demonstrates the importance of listening to community concerns and ensuring that public spaces remain welcoming and inclusive for everyone.
