Young Woman Dies in Rope Jumping Tragedy After Safety Cord Was Not Attached, Investigators Say

SÃO PAULO — Brazilian authorities have arrested three rope-jumping instructors following the death of a 21-year-old woman who fell from an abandoned bridge after reportedly jumping without being connected to any safety equipment.

The victim, Maria Eduarda Rodrigues de Freitas, died on Saturday during a rope-jumping activity at Ponte do Esqueleto, an abandoned bridge located near Limeira in São Paulo state. The incident has sparked national concern over safety procedures in extreme sports activities.

According to police investigator Andrea Levy, preliminary findings revealed that Freitas was not attached to the safety ropes designed to protect participants during the jump.

“The ropes were not attached to her,” Levy told local media, adding that the instructors involved admitted they could not explain how the critical safety failure occurred.

Investigators said the three instructors provided conflicting accounts during questioning and were unable to determine who was responsible for ensuring the safety equipment was properly secured before the jump.

“They do not remember whether they forgot to attach the ropes, who was supposed to do it, or who failed to carry out the final safety check,” Levy said. “But the fact remains that the victim was not connected to the safety system.”

The three instructors have been taken into custody and could face manslaughter charges as the investigation continues.

Freitas was laid to rest on Sunday, a day after the tragic accident that shocked family members, friends, and the wider community.

Video footage circulating on social media reportedly captured the moments before the fatal fall. According to investigators, Freitas had requested to perform the jump in an “airplane style” position, with two instructors lifting her above their shoulders while she extended her arms before being released.

The footage shows two instructors wearing helmets and safety harnesses launching the young woman from the bridge. Authorities noted that the instructors themselves appeared to be connected to safety systems while the victim was not.

The bridge, located approximately 148 kilometres north of São Paulo, has become a popular destination for adventure sports enthusiasts despite its abandoned status.

Rope jumping is considered an extreme sport that differs from traditional bungee jumping. While bungee jumping uses elastic cords that create a vertical bouncing motion, rope jumping utilizes low-stretch climbing ropes that transform the fall into a swinging pendulum movement.

Safety experts emphasize that proper attachment and multiple verification checks are essential before any jump takes place. Investigators are now examining whether established safety protocols were ignored or improperly followed during the event.

Authorities are also reviewing operational procedures used by the company responsible for organizing the activity and determining whether additional regulatory violations occurred.

The tragic death has renewed calls for stricter oversight of adventure tourism and extreme sports operations across Brazil, where participation in such activities has grown significantly in recent years.

Police said the investigation remains ongoing, and further charges could be considered depending on the outcome of the inquiry.

Freitas’ death has left many in Brazil mourning the loss of a young life while raising serious questions about safety accountability in high-risk recreational activities.
