A major criminal investigation into a series of extortion and arson incidents targeting retail businesses has intensified, with new charges laid against a key suspect and two others still wanted nationwide.
According to the Winnipeg Police Service, the Major Crimes Unit has continued its probe into coordinated attacks that occurred in July 2025 across multiple locations in the city.
Investigators allege that Jahaid Hossain Maruf, 26, played a central role in organizing and directing the extortion schemes and arson attacks. Already in custody from a previous arrest, Maruf was re-arrested on April 23, 2026, at the Winnipeg Remand Centre following the issuance of a new warrant.
He now faces additional serious charges, including multiple counts of conspiracy to commit extortion, as well as arson causing property damage and arson with disregard for human life. Authorities confirmed that he remains in custody as the case progresses.
Meanwhile, police are actively searching for two suspects who remain at large under Canada-wide warrants. Farhan Nabil, 29, is wanted in connection with conspiracy to commit both arson and extortion, while Jermaine Weekes, 40, is sought on multiple extortion charges.
The investigation stems from a wave of criminal activity between July 16 and July 23, 2025, during which several convenience stores and a warehouse were targeted. Incidents included arson attacks on properties along Spruce Street and Selkirk Avenue, as well as extortion demands made against business owners in exchange for protection from further harm.
Police also linked a theft incident at a retail business on Portage Avenue to the broader operation, concluding that all cases were interconnected.
So far, five individuals have been arrested and charged in relation to the investigation. Authorities believe the network operated in a coordinated manner, targeting small businesses through intimidation and violence.
The Winnipeg Police Service Major Crimes Unit continues to lead the investigation and is urging anyone with information to come forward.
