WestJet Offers Flexible Flight Changes as Strike Threat Raises Travel Concerns

As the possibility of a labour disruption continues to loom, WestJet has introduced a temporary travel flexibility policy allowing eligible passengers to change or cancel their flights without paying additional fees.

The Calgary-based airline announced that travellers with flights scheduled between July 30 and Aug. 4 can make a one-time change or cancellation to their booking at no extra cost. The measure is intended to provide customers with greater confidence and flexibility while negotiations with the airline’s flight attendants continue.

The move comes after WestJet flight attendants voted overwhelmingly in favour of strike action earlier this month. Approximately 4,400 cabin crew members represented by CUPE Local 8125 could legally begin a strike as early as Aug. 2 if a new collective agreement is not reached before then.

In a message sent to WestJet Rewards members, the airline acknowledged that uncertainty surrounding travel plans can be stressful for passengers. While expressing confidence that an agreement can still be reached without disrupting operations, WestJet said it wanted to give customers more control over their travel arrangements during the ongoing negotiations.

Union representatives welcomed the airline’s decision, describing it as a responsible step that helps reduce uncertainty for travellers. CUPE Local 8125 President Alia Hussain said passengers deserve flexibility while labour discussions continue, noting that customers should not have to worry about unexpected travel complications during the bargaining process.

Hussain also emphasized that the introduction of the flexible booking policy should not be viewed as confirmation that a strike is inevitable. She said both the union and the airline remain actively engaged in negotiations and continue working toward reaching a mutually acceptable agreement before any job action takes place.

WestJet has reiterated that it remains committed to achieving a fair agreement that improves wages and working conditions for cabin crew while ensuring the long-term sustainability of the airline. Company officials said bargaining efforts are ongoing and that meaningful progress remains the objective for both sides.

The potential strike has drawn attention because it could coincide with the busy August long weekend, one of Canada’s busiest travel periods. Any disruption during that time could affect thousands of domestic and international travellers, making contingency planning especially important for passengers.

Many travellers still remember the significant disruptions caused during the summer of 2024, when a strike by WestJet mechanics resulted in widespread flight cancellations and delays over the Canada Day long weekend. That labour dispute affected tens of thousands of passengers across the country and highlighted the impact industrial action can have during peak travel seasons.

Industry observers note that by offering free changes and cancellations in advance, WestJet is attempting to minimize inconvenience for customers while reducing pressure on travellers who may wish to adjust their plans before the Aug. 2 strike deadline.

Passengers with eligible bookings are encouraged to review their travel plans and make any necessary changes before departure if they are concerned about potential disruptions. The temporary policy allows travellers greater flexibility while negotiations continue behind the scenes.

Both WestJet and CUPE Local 8125 have indicated that discussions remain active and that both parties are focused on reaching an agreement without interrupting scheduled flights. Until a final deal is reached, however, travellers are being advised to stay informed about any updates affecting their itineraries.
