SURREY, British Columbia — Two teenagers were shot dead in what investigators describe as a targeted gang-related attack in Newton, a densely populated neighbourhood in Surrey known for its large South Asian and Punjabi community.

According to the Surrey Police Service, officers responded to reports of gunfire at approximately 10 p.m. on May 10 in the 7000 block of 133B Street near 70 Avenue. Police found two male victims, aged 16 and 18, suffering from gunshot wounds inside an underground parking lot.

Despite immediate life-saving efforts by officers and paramedics, both teenagers were pronounced dead at the scene.

The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) has taken over the investigation and confirmed that the double homicide was targeted and linked to the ongoing gang conflict in British Columbia. Investigators said both victims were Surrey residents and are believed to have had connections to organized crime.

Canadian authorities have not publicly released the identities of the victims. Community sources indicated that both teenagers were believed to be of Punjabi origin.

Investigators later discovered a grey four-door sedan burned near Enver Creek Secondary School in the area of 144 Street and 84 Avenue. Police suspect the vehicle may be connected to the fatal shooting.

IHIT spokesperson Freda Fong said the incident has left two families mourning the loss of “young lives taken far too soon.”

The killings are the latest in a series of gang-related shootings in the Lower Mainland, where several recent incidents have involved young people of South Asian descent. The violence has intensified concerns about youth recruitment into organized crime networks.

Brenda Locke expressed concern over the escalating violence and called for stronger anti-gang initiatives to protect young people and improve public safety.

Police are asking anyone who was in the area between 9 p.m. and 11 p.m. on May 10, or who may have dashcam footage, to contact investigators. No arrests have been announced, and the investigation remains ongoing.
