A 27-year-old man has been killed in a black bear attack in northeastern Saskatchewan, in a remote area roughly 85 kilometres northeast of Points North Landing, according to provincial officials.

The Saskatchewan Ministry of Environment confirmed the fatal incident occurred late last week, prompting a multi-agency investigation involving wildlife officers, RCMP, and the provincial coroner’s service. Authorities say the investigation is still in its early stages and few details have been released.

Officials reported that the bear involved in the attack was later euthanized by a civilian while authorities were en route to the scene. The animal’s remains were transported to Saskatoon for a necropsy, or post-mortem examination, to help determine the circumstances of the incident.

The Ministry of Community Safety expressed condolences to the victim’s family and reminded residents in bear-prone regions to exercise caution when in wilderness areas.

Wildlife authorities are also reinforcing general safety guidance for remote travel, including maintaining distance from wildlife, travelling in groups, and being alert to signs of animal activity such as tracks, scat, or disturbed terrain.

Federal guidance from Parks Canada emphasizes that bear encounters require different responses depending on the animal’s behaviour. Defensive encounters may call for passive responses such as slowly backing away, while aggressive situations may require deterrents like bear spray or loud intimidation tactics. Officials also stress that climbing to escape is often ineffective, as black bears are strong climbers.

The incident has renewed attention to wildlife safety in northern and remote parts of Canada, where human-wildlife encounters can be more frequent due to sparse population and expansive natural habitats.

Authorities say further updates will be provided as the investigation continues.
