Red Deer Teen Crowned Miss Queen Teen Canada at National Pageant

A 17 year old from Red Deer has earned a national title after being crowned Miss Queen Teen Canada at the Personality Pageants Canada National Finals in Airdrie.

Elizabella MacKenzie, who is preparing to enter Grade 12 at Lindsay Thurber Comprehensive High School, captured the national crown during the competition held on August 15.

MacKenzie said the moment was filled with nerves and uncertainty as she stood alongside the other finalists waiting for the winner to be announced.

She said she had already prepared herself for the possibility of not winning and was proud to share the stage with the other contestants. When her name was finally announced, however, the emotion of the moment quickly took over.

MacKenzie recalled shaking with excitement before the crown was placed on her head. She had promised herself that she would remain composed, but eventually broke down in tears of happiness as she realized she had become Miss Queen Teen Canada.

The Personality Pageants Canada system places significant emphasis on contestants’ character, personality, community involvement and ability to serve as positive role models.

For MacKenzie, that approach has made the experience particularly meaningful. She said contestants are encouraged to remain authentic and demonstrate who they are rather than focusing only on traditional aspects of pageantry.

The interview portion of the competition accounts for 30 per cent of the overall score, highlighting the importance placed on communication skills, personality and the qualities expected from a titleholder.

MacKenzie began participating in personality pageants in 2024. Her involvement came during a difficult period in her life when she was struggling during Grade 9.

She had recently lost her father to cancer and was also dealing with bullying at school. At the time, she said she struggled to find a place where she felt comfortable and connected.

Her mother eventually encouraged her to enter a pageant, an experience that MacKenzie says changed her outlook and helped her develop confidence.

Through pageantry, she discovered new friendships, developed personal goals and became increasingly interested in finding ways to make a difference in her community.

Her journey also inspired her to create Bella’s Literary Warriors, a platform focused on early childhood literacy and improving access to reading resources for children.

MacKenzie said the initiative grew from her belief that children should have opportunities to develop strong reading skills regardless of their circumstances.

She recognizes that literacy extends beyond simply being able to read a book. Strong literacy skills can influence education, confidence, communication and a child’s opportunities later in life.

Through Bella’s Literary Warriors, she hopes to help establish a stronger foundation for children who may otherwise struggle to access books, learning materials and other literacy resources.

Her community work is now an important part of her responsibilities as Miss Queen Teen Canada.

The national title gives MacKenzie a larger platform to promote the causes that matter to her while representing Red Deer and Alberta on a broader stage.

Her success also demonstrates how modern pageantry can provide young participants with opportunities to develop confidence, leadership abilities and community involvement.

Rather than focusing solely on appearance, Personality Pageants Canada places considerable attention on contestants’ personalities and their contributions to their communities.

For MacKenzie, that philosophy has been central to her own development. What began as an opportunity to step outside her comfort zone during a challenging period has evolved into a national achievement and a platform for advocacy.

As she begins her final year of high school, MacKenzie will now balance her Grade 12 studies with her responsibilities as Miss Queen Teen Canada.

Her experience has already taken her from a teenager struggling to find confidence to a national pageant titleholder with a growing community initiative.

The crown represents more than a competition victory for the Red Deer teenager. It provides her with an opportunity to encourage other young people to overcome difficult experiences, find their strengths and become involved in causes that can benefit their communities.

MacKenzie says her journey has taught her the importance of believing in herself and being willing to pursue opportunities even during difficult moments.

With the national title now secured, she will have the opportunity to continue building Bella’s Literary Warriors while representing the Miss Queen Teen Canada title throughout the coming year.

For Red Deer, her achievement is also a moment of local pride as one of the city’s young residents prepares to represent her community at the national level.

Her story highlights how personal challenges can sometimes become the starting point for confidence, leadership and community service, and MacKenzie now hopes to use her national platform to help give other children the opportunities she believes every young person deserves.
