The Royal Canadian Mounted Police has laid charges against an Ontario resident after multiple fraudulent passports were discovered in a commercial shipment at Toronto Pearson International Airport.
The investigation began when officers from the Canada Border Services Agency examined a 1,600-kilogram shipment arriving from Nigeria. During the inspection, border officers uncovered seven fake passports hidden inside sandals.
Authorities say the seized documents included five passports from The Gambia and two from South Africa. All of the passports reportedly featured the same photograph of a male individual but contained different names and inconsistent personal details.
Following the discovery, CBSA officers arrested the suspect and seized the forged documents along with additional materials connected to the alleged offence. The case was then handed over to the RCMP’s Toronto Airport Detachment Border Integrity Unit for further investigation.
Police have charged Nnenna Oketa, 44, of Caledon with knowingly possessing a forged passport under the Criminal Code. Authorities note that the charges have not yet been tested in court.
John McMath said the case highlights the importance of cooperation between law enforcement agencies in protecting Canada’s borders. Meanwhile, Lisa Janes emphasized the role of border officers in detecting and preventing fraudulent activity.
Officials say the investigation demonstrates ongoing efforts by Canadian authorities to combat document fraud and maintain border security.
