The government of Nunatsiavut has sent an official delegation to the Arctic Winter Games being held in Whitehorse, Yukon.

The initiative has been recognized by Lela Evans, Minister of Labrador Affairs and Minister of Indigenous Relations and Reconciliation, who congratulated the delegation and highlighted the importance of strengthening connections among northern Indigenous communities.

First Official Nunatsiavut Delegation

This marks the first time the Nunatsiavut Government has organized and led a delegation of Labrador Inuit participants to attend the Arctic Winter Games.

The group is visiting the event to meet with organizers, observe competitions and cultural programs, and learn about how northern regions develop and support their athletes.

Officials say the experience will help the Nunatsiavut Government explore the possibility of sending a full team to future Arctic Winter Games.

Learning From Other Northern Regions

During the visit, the delegation will engage with representatives from other northern regions participating in the games.

The goal is to better understand areas such as:

  • Athlete development programs
  • Cultural programming and events
  • Logistics and organization of teams
  • Governance and participation structures

Officials say these insights could support long-term plans for greater involvement by Nunatsiavut athletes in international northern competitions.

Cultural Performers Represent Inuit Heritage

The delegation also includes two youth cultural performers from the Labrador Inuit community.

They have been invited to take part in the event’s international cultural showcase, where Indigenous artists from across the Arctic share their traditions, music, and performances.

This cultural component highlights the importance of preserving Indigenous heritage while bringing communities together.

Strengthening Connections Among Inuit Youth

The Arctic Winter Games are known for promoting friendship, cultural exchange, and athletic competition among young athletes from northern regions.

For Inuit youth, the games provide a platform to celebrate their culture and connect with peers from other Arctic communities.

Minister Evans said the participation of the Nunatsiavut delegation represents an important step in building relationships between Inuit communities across the North.

Looking Toward Future Participation

Officials say the visit will help the Nunatsiavut Government assess what resources and planning would be required to bring a full Labrador Inuit team to future Arctic Winter Games.

The experience gained during this delegation visit could play a key role in developing opportunities for Inuit athletes and cultural representatives in the years ahead.
