Man charged in southwest assault

One man has been charged following random assaults that occurred last week in the city’s southwest.

Around 7:30 a.m., Thursday, Aug. 13, 2026, as part of District 8’s Crime Reduction Strategy, members of patrol were conducting a proactive deployment at the Somerset-Bridlewood CTrain station when they were approached by a man suffering injuries to his face.

The victim reported that an unknown man had aggressively confronted a woman on the CTrain platform while shouting racial slurs at her before striking her in the face. When the victim stepped in to intervene, he was then also assaulted before the suspect fled eastbound on the platform.

Officers pursued the suspect on foot while additional units quickly established containment. With assistance from Calgary Transit Public Safety, the suspect was prevented from re-entering the CTrain system and was located nearby a short time later.

The victim suffered minor injuries as a result of the assault.

At this time investigators have not been able to speak to the woman who was also assaulted and ask her or anyone else who may have witnessed the assaults to contact police.

As a result of his arrest, Steepan SURANE, 38, of Calgary, has been charged with one count of assault and one count of obstruction to a peace officer. SURANE was also arrested on 11 outstanding warrants.

He will next appear in court on Friday, Aug. 21, 2026.

Hate-motivation is being investigated as a potential factor in the assault.

“This incident is deeply concerning and has no place in our community, everyone deserves to feel safe using public transit and going about their daily lives without fear of violence or hate,” says District 8 Insp. Darry Midtdal. “We remain committed to holding those responsible accountable and encouraging anyone who witnesses or experiences similar behaviour to report it to police.”

Since mid-April, District 8 Community Resource Officers (CROs) have been conducting targeted enforcement at the Somerset-Bridlewood, Shawnessy and Fish Creek-Lacombe CTrain stations in response to ongoing crime, disorder and public safety concerns.

The CROs are leading the enforcement and community engagement initiative as part of the district’s comprehensive Crime Reduction Strategy. With support from the Community Engagement Response Team and patrol members, officers carried out enforcement and outreach activities, including weekday morning deployments on platforms and trains during peak commuter periods.
