TORONTO, September 20, 2026: The 2026 Toronto International Film Festival has concluded after 11 days of screenings, premieres and industry events, with Spanish film La Bola Negra taking the festival’s top audience prize.

Directed by Javier Calvo and Javier Ambrossi, La Bola Negra received the People’s Choice Award, the most closely watched audience honour presented at the annual Toronto festival.

The film had already generated significant attention following its premiere at Cannes earlier this year. Its success in Toronto has now placed the Netflix production firmly among the films attracting attention as the new awards season gets underway.

The People’s Choice Award is selected by festival audiences, with feature films and series included in TIFF’s Official Selection eligible for consideration. The award has developed a strong reputation as an early indicator of films that can remain prominent during the wider awards campaign.

La Bola Negra topped this year’s audience voting, while I Play Rocky, directed by Peter Farrelly, finished as the first runner up. Being Heumann, directed by Sian Heder, was named second runner up.

The result gives La Bola Negra an important platform heading into the 2026 and 2027 film awards season. TIFF’s audience prize has historically attracted considerable attention from the industry because a number of previous winners later received recognition from the Academy.

The festival also presented several other audience selected awards during its closing ceremony.

Darlene Love: I Know Where I’ve Been, directed by Barry Avrich, won the People’s Choice Documentary Award. Black Sunflowers by James Marcus Haney was the first runner up, while The Ultra Runner by Mila Aung Thwin placed second runner up.

The People’s Choice Midnight Madness Award went to Ladies and Gentlemen, Brian Mulroney, directed by Matthew Rankin. The Spiral by Paolo Strippoli finished first runner up and Arrested Memory by SABU was second runner up.

The International People’s Choice Award was presented to Elsinore, directed by Simon Stone. Possible Love by Lee Chang dong was named first runner up, followed by The Assassins from director Hur Jin ho.

TIFF’s juried awards also recognized films across international and Canadian categories.

The Platform Prize went to Angh, directed by Theja Rio, while Brace Your Heart by Amanda Kernell received an honorable mention.

Sunburn, directed by Serville Pobletel, won the award for Best Canadian Feature Film. Man in Motion: The Rick Hansen Story, directed by Adrian Buitenhuis, received an honorable mention.

The Best Canadian Discovery Award was presented to Smudge the Blades by Cody Lightning. The Black Box Is Orange by Yuula Benivolski received an honorable mention.

The festival’s short film competition also produced several winners.

Mammalia, directed by Elia Kalogianni, received the Short Cuts Award for Best International Short Film, while The Spectacular Death of Prisca by Kaelo Iyizoba received an honorable mention.

Fight Kid, directed by Michael Del Monte, won the Short Cuts Award for Best Canadian Short Film. Almost Pink by Justine Prince received an honorable mention.

The award for Best Animated Film went to Into the Betaverse, directed by Varun Raman and Tom Hancock. The Terminal by Alexandre Siqueira received an honorable mention.

The People’s Choice Award remains one of TIFF’s most closely followed honours because it is determined directly by audiences rather than a professional jury. Over the years, several films that won the Toronto audience prize went on to receive major awards attention, including Best Picture nominations at the Academy Awards.

Previous winners have included The King’s Speech, 12 Years a Slave, Green Book and Nomadland, all of which eventually won the Academy Award for Best Picture.

The 2026 result also adds another chapter to the award’s growing history as a launchpad for films entering the international awards conversation.

With La Bola Negra now taking the top audience prize, the Spanish production leaves Toronto with significant momentum. Its earlier success at Cannes, followed by its strong reception at TIFF, gives the film a prominent position as studios, filmmakers and audiences turn their attention toward the next stage of the awards calendar.

The conclusion of TIFF 2026 also highlighted the diversity of the festival’s program, with awards recognizing international productions, Canadian filmmakers, documentaries, genre films, emerging directors and short film creators.

The festival once again demonstrated the importance of audience response alongside professional jury recognition. While the various awards celebrate different areas of filmmaking, the People’s Choice Award carries a distinct significance because it reflects the reaction of festival audiences themselves.

For La Bola Negra, that response has transformed an already closely watched film into one of the early titles attracting attention as the 2026 awards season begins.
