Josh Hartnett has opened up about filming intimate scenes with Anne Hathaway and Dakota Johnson for the psychological thriller Verity, revealing that an intimacy coordinator played an important role in creating a comfortable and professional working environment on set.
Hartnett, who portrays Jeremy Crawford in the film, discussed the experience during a recent interview, explaining that intimacy coordination helped the cast navigate some of the more demanding scenes in the adaptation of Colleen Hoover’s bestselling novel.
The actor said the presence of an intimacy coordinator was an important part of the production, but added that the strong relationship between the cast and director Michael Showalter helped make the filming process feel relaxed and collaborative.
According to Hartnett, the cast quickly developed a close friendship while working on the movie. He said that despite the intense and disturbing nature of the story, there was plenty of laughter behind the scenes.
The actor described Hathaway and Johnson as highly professional performers who approached their roles with care and purpose. Their ability to understand the characters and the story allowed the actors to develop the chemistry required for the film’s complicated relationships.
Verity centers on Lowen Ashleigh, a struggling writer played by Johnson, who is hired to complete a successful book series after its original author, Verity Crawford, played by Hathaway, is unable to continue writing.
Lowen travels to the Crawford family’s isolated estate, where she begins working on Verity’s unfinished material. During her stay, she discovers a disturbing autobiographical manuscript containing revelations about Verity, her marriage and her family.
As Lowen becomes increasingly absorbed in the Crawford household, the boundaries between truth and fiction begin to disappear. Her relationship with Jeremy, played by Hartnett, becomes increasingly complicated as she attempts to understand what is really happening inside the family.
The film combines psychological suspense, attraction and deception, creating an atmosphere in which the characters are constantly forced to question one another’s intentions.
Hartnett said his ability to build the necessary chemistry with Hathaway and Johnson was helped by the collaborative approach taken by Showalter. He explained that the relationships between the characters developed naturally through the story, with individual moments gradually building toward more complicated emotional dynamics.
The actor also credited both actresses for being focused and deliberate in their performances. Working alongside performers who understood exactly what their characters required, he said, gave him confidence while handling the film’s more challenging material.
Although Verity contains several intense and intimate moments, Hartnett said the atmosphere between the actors was often much lighter than what audiences will see on screen.
He joked that because the cast became so comfortable with one another during production, another project featuring the same group would ideally be a comedy. The comment highlighted the contrast between the dark subject matter of Verity and the friendly relationship that developed among the performers.
For Hartnett, that balance between professionalism and familiarity was important. Intimacy coordination provided a structured approach to scenes requiring physical and emotional boundaries, while the trust among the actors allowed them to focus on the demands of the story.
The film ultimately depends heavily on the complicated connections between Lowen, Verity and Jeremy. Their relationships form the center of the mystery, with attraction, suspicion and manipulation constantly influencing the direction of the story.
Hathaway brings the role of Verity to the screen as an established author whose carefully controlled public image is challenged by the discoveries made by Lowen. Johnson plays Lowen as a writer whose professional opportunity gradually turns into a much more dangerous experience.
Hartnett’s Jeremy sits at the heart of the tension between the two women, making his character essential to the film’s exploration of trust, desire and uncertainty.
The actor’s comments offer a glimpse into how the cast approached the demanding material while maintaining a professional environment throughout production. His praise for Hathaway and Johnson also reflects the importance of the three central performances in bringing Hoover’s complicated story to the screen.
With its combination of psychological mystery and emotionally charged relationships, Verity places its cast in situations that require both careful preparation and strong on screen chemistry. Hartnett’s experience suggests that the combination of intimacy coordination, professional trust and a collaborative director helped the performers tackle those scenes while maintaining a positive atmosphere behind the camera.
