Iran has confirmed that it is fully prepared for its national football team’s participation in the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will be jointly hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico, amid ongoing geopolitical tensions involving the region.
The announcement was made by government spokesperson Fatemeh Mohajerani, who said all necessary arrangements have been completed to ensure the team’s participation and performance at the global tournament.
Government Confirms Full Sporting Readiness
According to officials, Iran’s Ministry of Youth and Sports has finalized logistical, administrative, and sporting preparations for the national squad.
The spokesperson emphasized that the preparations were carried out under direct instructions from the sports ministry, with a focus on ensuring adequate facilities and support for the team during the competition.
World Cup Participation Confirmed
Iran’s participation in the tournament was previously uncertain due to regional tensions and diplomatic disputes involving the United States and its allies. However, officials now say the team is set to compete as scheduled.
FIFA President Gianni Infantino has also stated that Iran is expected to take part, noting that the country qualified and that players have expressed willingness to compete.
He reiterated that “sports should be outside of politics,” reinforcing FIFA’s position on maintaining tournament integrity.
Group Stage Matches in the United States
Iran is scheduled to play its Group G matches in the United States, with fixtures planned in Los Angeles and Seattle. The team’s training base for the tournament is expected to be in Tucson, Arizona.
Despite earlier discussions about relocating matches due to security concerns, FIFA rejected requests to move Iran’s fixtures to neutral venues.
Diplomatic and Security Concerns
The build-up to Iran’s participation has been shaped by broader geopolitical tensions, including military conflict and diplomatic friction involving several countries.
US President Donald Trump has previously acknowledged Iran’s qualification but raised concerns about safety and logistics for the team’s presence in the United States.
Tournament Context
The 2026 World Cup will be the first edition to feature 48 teams, marking a major expansion of the global competition.
Iran’s confirmed participation underscores FIFA’s efforts to keep the tournament inclusive despite ongoing international political challenges.
