In a landmark decision, FIFA has approved a refugee-based women’s football team to represent Afghanistan in official international competitions, bypassing the need for recognition from the country’s Taliban-controlled authorities.

The team, known as Afghan Women United, is made up of players living in exile across regions including Australia, Europe, and the Middle East. Under newly revised regulations set to be endorsed by FIFA’s governing council, the squad will now be recognized as the official national women’s team of Afghanistan.

Historic Shift in Policy

Previously, FIFA required national teams to be approved by their respective football federations. In Afghanistan’s case, that meant recognition from the Taliban-controlled federation, which has refused to support women’s football due to restrictions on female participation in sports.

The new decision marks a significant departure from that framework, enabling Afghan women athletes to compete on the global stage despite political barriers at home.

Background of the Team

Afghan Women United was formed following the Taliban’s return to power in 2021, which led to the dismantling of the country’s official women’s national team originally established in 2007. Many players fled the country and sought asylum abroad, continuing their football careers in exile while advocating for recognition.

For more than three years, the players and their supporters have campaigned for FIFA to intervene, seeking both official status and financial backing.

Broader Support Strategy

The recognition is part of a wider FIFA initiative aimed at supporting women and girls in Afghanistan. The strategy includes:

  • Diplomatic engagement to promote women’s participation in sports
  • Organizing international fixtures for displaced players
  • Creating new competitive platforms, such as the FIFA Unites: Women’s Series

Last year, logistical challenges, including visa issues, forced one such tournament to be relocated from the United Arab Emirates to Morocco.

Voices from the Team

Team captain Fatima Haidari, who is currently based in Italy, has spoken about the emotional and symbolic significance of playing.

She described football as a source of strength and unity, saying that stepping onto the pitch represents not only personal resilience but also the hopes of countless Afghan girls who are unable to participate in sports.

A Symbol of Resistance and Hope

The decision is being widely seen as a major step forward for gender equality in sport, offering displaced athletes a platform to compete internationally while sending a strong message about inclusion and rights.

As Afghan Women United prepares to take the field under official status, the move highlights the evolving role of global sports bodies in addressing political and humanitarian challenges beyond the game.
