Canada Upsets USA to Capture Historic First FIBA U18 Men’s AmeriCup Championship

León, Mexico: Canada’s rising basketball stars made history on Sunday night, defeating the United States 67-65 to capture the country’s first-ever gold medal at the FIBA U18 Men’s AmeriCup and end the Americans’ seven-tournament championship streak.

The victory marks one of the biggest achievements in Canadian youth basketball history and highlights the continued growth of the sport across the country. The United States had dominated the competition for nearly two decades, winning every tournament since 2008. Canada’s triumph ended that run and secured its first championship at the event.

Canada entered the final unbeaten after an impressive tournament campaign that included dominant victories throughout group play and a commanding 115-49 semifinal win over Puerto Rico.

The championship game was tightly contested from start to finish. The Americans held an early advantage and the teams were deadlocked 35-35 at halftime. The contest featured numerous lead changes before Canada delivered a decisive finish in the closing moments.

Trailing 65-62 late in the fourth quarter, Canada responded when Deng Ngor connected on a crucial three-pointer to tie the game. Moments later, Ngor scored the go-ahead basket that proved to be the championship winner as Canada shut down the American offence over the final minute of play.

Tournament MVP Javion Tyndale led Canada with 19 points, eight assists and three steals in the final. His outstanding performances throughout the tournament earned him Most Valuable Player honours and helped guide Canada to the historic title.

Ngor added 15 points, while Lyris Robinson contributed 10 points in the championship victory.

The win further reinforces Canada’s emergence as a major force in international basketball. The country’s senior men’s program is currently ranked among the world’s elite, while Canadian NBA stars such as Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Jamal Murray and RJ Barrett have helped elevate the sport’s profile nationwide.
