Calgary is set to host one of the city’s largest annual cultural and religious celebrations as the 2026 Nagar Kirtan parade takes place on Saturday, May 9, bringing tens of thousands of participants to northeast Calgary.

Organizers and city officials expect approximately 80,000 attendees from across Calgary and surrounding communities to take part in the vibrant Sikh procession, which celebrates the values of service, equality and community.

Festivities will begin at 10 a.m. at the Dashmesh Culture Centre and continue until 5 p.m., concluding at Prairie Winds Park, where cultural performances, food and family activities will take place throughout the day.

The annual Nagar Kirtan is one of the most significant events for Calgary’s Sikh community and has grown into a major multicultural celebration that attracts participants of all backgrounds.

City officials are advising residents and visitors to plan ahead, as significant road closures, transit detours and parking restrictions will affect several neighbourhoods in the northeast.

What Is Nagar Kirtan?

Nagar Kirtan is a sacred Sikh tradition featuring a community procession with devotional hymns, spiritual readings and acts of seva, or selfless service.

The event is organized to commemorate important Sikh values and offers an opportunity for participants to come together in prayer, reflection and celebration.

Throughout the day, volunteers provide free meals and refreshments to attendees, reflecting the Sikh tradition of generosity and hospitality.

Free Calgary Transit Shuttle Service

To help manage the large crowds and reduce traffic congestion, Calgary Transit will operate free shuttle services to and from the event.

Special shuttle routes will serve multiple communities, including:

  • Coral Springs
  • Cornerstone
  • Panorama Hills
  • Saddle Ridge
  • Skyview Ranch
  • Temple
  • Chestermere

Dedicated routes 514, 521, 525, 528, 536 and 537 will transport participants to the Dashmesh Culture Centre and McKnight-Westwinds CTrain Station during the morning.

In the afternoon, the same routes will connect Prairie Winds Park with surrounding communities.

Officials strongly recommend that attendees use transit rather than drive, as parking near the event will be extremely limited.

Major Road Closures in Northeast Calgary

Several major roads will be closed or partially restricted from approximately 6 a.m. to 4 p.m., with traffic delays expected to continue for several hours after the parade concludes.

Rolling closures will also occur along the parade route as participants move toward Prairie Winds Park.

Prairie Winds Park Amenities Temporarily Closed

Several amenities at Prairie Winds Park will be temporarily unavailable to accommodate the event and ensure public safety.

Residents visiting the park should expect restricted access to some facilities and increased activity throughout the day.

Parking Restrictions and Enforcement

Temporary parking restrictions will be in effect throughout nearby communities.

The City of Calgary says parking bylaws will be actively enforced, and improperly parked vehicles may be ticketed or towed.

Drivers should expect significant congestion before, during and after the event as large crowds arrive and depart.

Community Celebration and Cultural Significance

The Calgary Nagar Kirtan has become one of the city’s most visible and inclusive celebrations of faith and multiculturalism.

Thousands of volunteers contribute to the event by preparing food, organizing logistics and welcoming guests from all communities.

For many Calgarians, the procession represents not only a religious observance but also a powerful demonstration of unity, service and cultural diversity.

Advice for Attendees

City officials encourage participants to:

  • Use Calgary Transit or free shuttle services
  • Arrive early to avoid delays
  • Follow posted signage and traffic directions
  • Wear comfortable clothing and prepare for changing weather
