The Calgary Flames will select sixth overall in the 2026 NHL Entry Draft, a position the organization hopes will yield another cornerstone player as the franchise continues its long-term rebuild under general manager Craig Conroy.

The Flames entered the draft lottery with the fourth-best odds among non-playoff teams, carrying a 9.5 per cent chance of landing the coveted first overall selection. However, after the ping pong balls were drawn, Calgary slipped two spots and will now pick sixth.

While the team missed out on selecting consensus top prospect Gavin McKenna, considered one of the most dynamic young players in recent years, Conroy remains confident that Calgary can add a high-impact talent at its draft position.

“We’ve gotten really good players there in the past,” Conroy told reporters after the lottery results were announced.

History of Success at No. 6

The sixth overall slot has been kind to Calgary before. In 2013, the Flames selected Sean Monahan, who became one of the team’s most productive centers. Three years later, the club drafted Matthew Tkachuk, who developed into a franchise star and fan favorite.

Conroy said the organization will not draft based on positional need but will instead focus on selecting the most talented player available.

“If it’s forward, defence, goalie—whatever—we’re going to pick the best one,” he said.

Rebuild Taking Shape

Since taking over as general manager in 2023, Conroy has reshaped the roster by trading established veterans and accumulating draft picks and prospects. Deals involving players such as Elias Lindholm, Noah Hanifin, MacKenzie Weegar and Nazem Kadri have significantly strengthened Calgary’s prospect pool.

Several young players are already showing promise, including defenseman Zayne Parekh and forward Matvei Gridin.

According to hockey analysts, the Flames now possess depth but still need an elite game-changing player capable of leading the team back to contention.

Economic Stakes Beyond the Draft

Sports economist Moshe Lander says star players rarely transform a franchise’s finances immediately, but they can significantly increase long-term value by helping teams make deep playoff runs.

“An extra 10 to 14 home playoff games can generate enormous revenue,” Lander explained. “That’s where the real financial payoff comes.”

According to Forbes, the Flames were valued at approximately $1.9 billion in 2025, a dramatic increase from the $16 million paid for the franchise in 1980.

New Arena, New Expectations

The 2026 draft arrives at a pivotal moment for the franchise. The team is preparing to leave the iconic Scotiabank Saddledome and move into the new Scotia Place in 2027.

Team executives hope the combination of emerging young talent and a modern arena will usher in a new era of success.

Calgary has not won a playoff series since 2022 and has not captured the Stanley Cup since 1989.

Fans Looking for a Return to Glory

Attendance at the Saddledome dipped this season as the team endured another difficult campaign. Analysts say supporters remain patient, but expectations are rising as the rebuild progresses.

The sixth overall pick gives Calgary another opportunity to add a potential franchise cornerstone and accelerate its return to playoff contention.

For Flames fans, the message is clear: the future is being built now, and this year’s draft selection could become one of the most important pieces in the club’s next championship pursuit.
