The family of Jeff Bezos has donated $100 million to the Robin Hood to support early childhood education and help expand access to universal childcare in New York City.

The gift, made by Mike and Jackie Bezos, will establish the Jackie Bezos Endowment for Early Childhood. The endowment will focus on funding programs that improve education and development opportunities for young children. The family has also pledged an additional $25 million if matching funds are secured, bringing the potential total contribution to $150 million.

The donation aligns with one of the key campaign promises of New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, who has pledged to make 2-K programming and childcare for two-year-olds free and universally available throughout the city.

Despite his criticism of extreme wealth and support for higher taxes on billionaires, Mayor Mamdani welcomed partnerships with philanthropic organizations to help deliver large-scale social programs. City officials said expanding universal childcare will require cooperation among government, providers, labour groups, families and charitable organizations.

Robin Hood, founded in 1988 by Paul Tudor Jones, is one of New York’s largest anti-poverty charities. The organization supports more than 300 nonprofits and has played a significant role in housing, food security and educational initiatives across the city.

Robin Hood CEO Richard R. Buery Jr. said public funding should remain the main source of support for childcare expansion, but philanthropic contributions can help improve and accelerate implementation.

The major donation is expected to strengthen New York City’s efforts to provide affordable and accessible childcare, while expanding opportunities for thousands of working families and young children.
