Afghanistan to Host India in Name Only as Three Match T20 Series Moves to Delhi

Afghanistan will officially be the home team when it faces India in a three match Twenty20 international series in September, but the entire contest will take place in New Delhi as Afghanistan continues to rely on overseas venues for its international cricket.

The matches are scheduled to be played at the Arun Jaitley Stadium, giving India the familiar surroundings and home conditions despite Afghanistan being designated as the host side.

The unusual arrangement reflects the continuing challenges facing Afghanistan cricket. The country has largely staged its international home fixtures in the United Arab Emirates in recent years, while security concerns have prevented the regular return of international cricket to Afghanistan since the Taliban took control of the country in 2021.

For the Afghanistan Cricket Board, however, hosting the series in India provides an opportunity to stage an important international assignment in a major cricket market while maintaining a strong relationship with one of the sport’s most influential cricketing nations.

Afghanistan Cricket Board chairman Mirwais Ashraf said the board had previously hosted home matches in both India and the UAE and believed India was an appropriate location for such an important series.

The decision also reflects the growing cricketing relationship between Afghanistan and India. Indian cricket authorities have repeatedly provided support to Afghanistan as the country’s national team has established itself as an increasingly competitive force in international cricket.

Indian cricket board president Mithun Manhas said India remained committed to supporting the development of Afghan cricket and strengthening cooperation between the two countries.

The September T20 series will be particularly important for Afghanistan as the team continues to build depth and experience in the shortest international format. Playing against India will provide a major test for Afghanistan’s batting, bowling and tactical discipline.

When the sides last met in June, India produced a commanding performance in a one off Test, winning by an innings and 300 runs. India then completed a 3 0 sweep of the subsequent one day international series.

Afghanistan have developed a reputation for producing dangerous players in limited overs cricket, particularly through their strong spin bowling resources and their growing experience in franchise T20 competitions around the world.

For Afghanistan, the opportunity to play an international series in India could also provide valuable experience away from the UAE, where the team has frequently staged its home fixtures.

The absence of regular international cricket in Afghanistan remains one of the biggest challenges facing the country’s cricket administration. Hosting matches abroad allows the national team to maintain an international schedule while avoiding the security and logistical difficulties associated with staging major international sporting events at home.

Despite those challenges, Afghanistan has continued to make significant progress on the international stage. Its rise in limited overs cricket has been driven by a generation of talented players who have gained experience through domestic competitions and international franchise leagues.

The team has also developed a growing fan base, making fixtures against major cricketing nations particularly important commercially and competitively.
