Bangladesh captain Litton Das has backed Mustafizur Rahman after the experienced pacer endured an expensive spell during the team’s Asian Games semifinal defeat to Pakistan, insisting he would make the same decision again if given another opportunity.

Bangladesh’s hopes of reaching the men’s cricket final and competing for the gold medal ended on Thursday after Pakistan secured a six wicket victory in a rain affected semifinal at Korogi Sports Park in Nisshin, Japan.

Batting first in a match reduced to 13 overs per side, Bangladesh managed 111 for seven. Pakistan reached the target at 112 for four in 12.4 overs, earning a place in the gold medal match.

Mustafizur was brought into the attack for two overs but conceded 41 runs. He did claim the wicket of Saim Ayub, but Pakistan’s batters attacked him effectively and his figures became a major talking point after the match.

Litton, however, rejected the suggestion that selecting Mustafizur had been a mistake.

The Bangladesh captain said the team could have defended the total if they had bowled more effectively during the middle overs and prevented Pakistan from hitting so many sixes. He also pointed out that Mustafizur has delivered important performances for Bangladesh over many years.

Litton explained that several bowling options were available, but he believed Mustafizur was the best choice at the time. He added that the decision might have looked different if the pacer had taken several wickets instead of conceding heavily.

The captain’s comments reflected his belief that individual performances should be judged in the context of the decision making required during a fast changing match.

Bangladesh also faced difficult circumstances before taking the field. Their preparations were heavily disrupted by persistent rain, which kept the players inside their hotel for several days and prevented them from training as planned.

The team had not played a match before the semifinal because their scheduled quarterfinal against Malaysia was abandoned due to rain. As a result, their encounter with Pakistan became their first competitive game of the tournament.

Litton admitted that the lack of match practice and preparation made the semifinal particularly challenging. Bangladesh also lost the toss, leaving them with limited control over how the match developed.

The playing conditions were difficult to assess, according to the captain, and the Bangladesh players had no recent experience on the pitch to guide their decisions.

Bangladesh initially struggled with the bat after being asked to build a total in a shortened match. However, Towhid Hridoy played an important role in stabilising the innings, while his partnership with Mosaddek Hossain helped Bangladesh recover and post a competitive score.

Litton praised the two batters for rebuilding the innings after Bangladesh found themselves under pressure early on.

He explained that the long period spent indoors meant the players had to adjust quickly once they finally returned to the field. Without a recent match or practice session on the pitch, the batters had little information about how the surface would behave.

The opening overs therefore involved an element of uncertainty, with Bangladesh gradually learning how to approach the conditions.

Pakistan adapted more effectively during the chase. Despite losing wickets, their batters maintained the required scoring rate and reached the target with nine deliveries remaining.

For Bangladesh, the defeat ended their hopes of securing the gold medal, which had been the team’s stated objective before travelling to Japan.

Litton admitted that failing to reach the final was disappointing, particularly because the team had arrived with the ambition of competing for the top prize.

The captain nevertheless said Bangladesh would continue pursuing success in future tournaments. He acknowledged that performances are affected by circumstances beyond a team’s control, while insisting that his players had given their best effort under difficult conditions.

Bangladesh will now have to turn their attention to future competitions, with Litton expressing hope that another generation of players will eventually achieve the gold medal goal that his team could not accomplish in Japan.

For Mustafizur, the semifinal will remain a difficult outing statistically, but Litton’s comments made clear that the experienced bowler continues to have the captain’s backing despite the costly spell against Pakistan.

The defeat was ultimately shaped by a combination of Bangladesh’s limited preparation, challenging match conditions and Pakistan’s successful chase. With the gold medal no longer within reach, Bangladesh’s campaign has ended earlier than the team had hoped, but Litton maintained that the pursuit of Asian Games success will continue with future Bangladesh sides.
