The University of Calgary has improved its position in the latest global university rankings, moving up to 185th place worldwide in the 2027 Times Higher Education World University Rankings.
The university achieved an overall score of 59.9, marking an improvement from its 200th-place ranking in the previous year. Its progress continues a positive trend, following its placement in the 201st to 250th range in the 2024 rankings.
The annual rankings assess more than 2,000 research-focused universities around the world, using 17 performance indicators grouped into five key areas. These include teaching, research environment, research quality, industry engagement and international outlook, providing a broad assessment of universities’ academic and research activities.
The University of Calgary placed eighth among Canadian institutions, improving from ninth position in the previous edition. Its performance across several categories contributed to its overall standing, with particularly strong scores in industry engagement, research quality and international outlook.
The university received a score of 39.9 for teaching and 44.7 for research environment. It achieved 84.7 for research quality, 88.7 for industry and 82 for international outlook. These results highlight the institution’s performance in research impact, collaboration with industry and international engagement, alongside its teaching and research environment.
The University of Alberta also featured prominently, securing 118th place globally and ranking fifth among Canadian universities.
The University of Toronto was the highest-ranked Canadian institution, placing 22nd worldwide. McGill University followed at 43rd, while the University of British Columbia secured 44th place, reflecting the continued international presence of Canadian universities in higher education.
At the global level, the University of Oxford claimed first place with an overall score of 97.9. The Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Princeton University followed, completing the top three positions.
The latest results add to the University of Calgary’s recent recognition in international higher education assessments. Earlier this year, the institution was also included among the world’s top 300 universities in a separate ranking that considered approximately 8,000 institutions globally.
The improved position in the Times Higher Education rankings provides another measure of the university’s standing in the international academic community. The assessment considers multiple dimensions of university performance rather than relying on a single indicator, allowing institutions to be evaluated across their educational, research and industry-related activities.
The University of Calgary’s rise from 200th to 185th place also strengthens its position among Canadian universities, where it moved up one spot compared with the previous year.
As universities compete internationally for research opportunities, academic partnerships, students and industry collaboration, global rankings remain one way to track their performance and visibility. While rankings offer a snapshot based on specific indicators and methodology, they do not capture every aspect of the student experience or the contributions universities make to their local communities.
The 2027 results place the University of Calgary among the leading institutions in Canada and reflect its progress in several areas measured by the ranking. Its performance in research quality, industry engagement and international outlook contributed to its improved global position, while the university continues to be assessed alongside thousands of research-intensive institutions worldwide.
