BTS Decline to Submit Music for 2027 Grammy Awards Despite New Asian Pop Category

Global K pop sensation BTS has announced that it will not submit any of its music for consideration at the 2027 Grammy Awards, saying the group wants its work to be appreciated without being defined by language or regional categories.

The seven member group shared the decision in a joint statement, expressing gratitude to its worldwide fanbase while explaining that it hopes its music will be recognized for its artistic value rather than being separated by geographical or linguistic distinctions.

The announcement comes shortly after the Recording Academy introduced a new Grammy category for Best Asian Pop Music Performance. The category is intended to honour outstanding music from Asian pop genres, including K pop, J pop and C pop, with eligibility tied to songs that make meaningful use of one or more Asian languages.

BTS’s decision has attracted widespread attention because the group’s latest album, Arirang, features a majority of songs performed in English. While the new category was designed to increase recognition for Asian artists, the band’s latest release may not have fit its language requirements.

Over the years, BTS has earned multiple Grammy nominations and delivered several memorable performances at the awards ceremony. Despite receiving international acclaim and becoming one of the most successful music groups in the world, the band has yet to win a Grammy Award.

All seven members, RM, Jin, Suga, J Hope, Jimin, V and Jungkook, have also served as voting members of the Recording Academy since 2019, making their decision not to submit music especially significant.

The group is currently enjoying one of the biggest comeback years of its career. Following the completion of mandatory military service by all members, BTS reunited and released Arirang, their first full album in several years.

The album achieved immediate commercial success by debuting at the top of the Billboard 200 chart. Its lead single, Swim, also reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100, further reinforcing the group’s global popularity and continued influence in the international music industry.
