Manpreet Singh Equals Historic India Record as Netherlands Edge India 3-2 in FIH Pro League Thriller

The Indian men’s hockey team suffered a hard-fought 3-2 defeat against reigning champions the Netherlands in the FIH Pro League 2025-26 at Rotterdam’s Hockey Club on Sunday, in a match that also marked a historic personal milestone for veteran midfielder Manpreet Singh.

Manpreet equalled the long-standing Indian record of 412 international appearances, matching the achievement of former captain and hockey legend Dilip Tirkey. The landmark occasion, however, ended in disappointment as the Dutch edged India in a closely contested encounter.

World No. 2 Netherlands started aggressively and quickly established control of possession. Their early pressure paid dividends in the third minute when Miles Bukkens converted after a series of penalty corners, giving the hosts a deserved 1-0 lead.

India responded positively and came close to equalizing when Shilanand Lakra struck the post. Moments later, the visitors found their breakthrough through Dilpreet Singh. A brilliant long aerial pass from captain Harmanpreet Singh split the Dutch defence, allowing Dilpreet to finish confidently from a difficult angle and level the score at 1-1.

The Dutch continued to dominate possession throughout the second quarter, creating several scoring opportunities. Indian goalkeeper Suraj Karkera produced a series of important saves to keep his side in the contest.

As India increasingly looked dangerous on counterattacks, Dilpreet nearly added a second goal but was denied by an excellent save from the Netherlands goalkeeper. The hosts eventually restored their advantage before halftime when Koen Bijen finished a swift attacking move with a first-time strike, sending the Netherlands into the break with a 2-1 lead.

India emerged from halftime with renewed determination and greater control of the game. Their efforts were rewarded when they earned their first penalty corner of the match. Executing a well-worked variation, Sukhjeet Singh completed the move with a clinical finish to bring India level once again at 2-2.

The parity was short-lived. The Dutch answered almost immediately with a penalty-corner variation of their own. Tijmen Reyenga powered his shot past the Indian goalkeeper to restore the Netherlands’ lead at 3-2.

Facing another deficit, India showed resilience in the final quarter and pushed forward in search of an equaliser. The visitors pinned the Dutch deep inside their own half and won several penalty corners during the closing minutes.

Despite sustained pressure and determined attacking play, India were unable to find a breakthrough as the Netherlands defended resolutely to preserve their narrow advantage and claim all three points.

While the result was disappointing for India, the match will be remembered for Manpreet Singh’s remarkable achievement. By reaching 412 international appearances, he joined Dilip Tirkey at the top of India’s all-time appearances list, further cementing his place among the country’s greatest hockey players.

The defeat leaves India eighth in the FIH Pro League standings with four points from eight matches. The team will now look to regroup quickly as they prepare for their next challenge against Germany on Wednesday.

With several matches remaining in the campaign, India will aim to convert promising performances into victories as they continue their pursuit of valuable points against the world’s top hockey nations.
