Funeral for Fallen OPP Constable Tarun Bali Set for Thursday in Mississauga

Family, friends, law enforcement officers and dignitaries from across Ontario will gather Thursday to honour the life and service of Ontario Provincial Police Constable Tarun Bali, who was killed in the line of duty while serving in northern Ontario.

The funeral service for Const. Bali, 29, is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. at the Mississauga Sports and Entertainment Centre. The ceremony will bring together members of the Ontario Provincial Police, emergency services personnel, military representatives and community leaders to pay tribute to an officer whose career and life were marked by dedication, professionalism and compassion.

While the funeral service itself will be reserved for invited guests, police officials have announced that members of the public will have opportunities to watch the service through a livestream and gather along designated locations to witness the funeral cortege as it passes through the Greater Toronto Area.

The Ontario Provincial Police have also established several ways for community members to express their condolences. Online memorial messages are being accepted, while books of condolence have been made available at OPP detachments in Orangeville and Primrose. Residents wishing to pay their respects are encouraged to visit the locations during regular operating hours.

Const. Bali lost his life on June 9 while assisting officers in Hearst, Ontario, nearly 950 kilometres north of Toronto. Police say members of the OPP’s James Bay Detachment were attempting to stop a vehicle when the officer was fatally struck. He died at the scene despite efforts to save him.

The incident has deeply affected law enforcement agencies across Canada and has generated an outpouring of support from fellow officers, community organizations and residents.

Born in Naya Nangal, Punjab, India, Bali later became a proud Canadian citizen and dedicated himself to serving communities across Ontario. He joined the Ontario Provincial Police and was assigned to the Dufferin Detachment in Orangeville, where he quickly earned the respect of colleagues through his commitment and professionalism.

Although he had served with the OPP for just over two years, officials say he demonstrated exceptional promise and a strong commitment to public service. At the time of his death, he was temporarily deployed to the James Bay Detachment, assisting with policing duties in northern Ontario.

Beyond his law enforcement career, Bali was actively involved in community service. He volunteered with Peel Region Victim Services and contributed his time to cultural and community initiatives through the Sur-Taal Heritage Organization. Friends and colleagues describe him as compassionate, approachable and deeply committed to helping others.

Fluent in several languages, including Punjabi, Hindi and Urdu, Bali built strong connections with diverse communities and worked tirelessly to bridge cultural and social gaps through his service.

In a statement, the Ontario Provincial Police described him as a valued and respected member of the force.

“Constable Tarun Bali was a dedicated, enthusiastic officer with a strong sense of community. He exemplified a strong work ethic and demonstrated tremendous potential. His commitment and contributions will not be forgotten. He will forever be a hero in life.”

Police officials say they continue to work closely with Bali’s family to ensure their wishes are respected while providing ongoing support during this difficult period.

The tragic loss has served as a powerful reminder of the risks faced daily by law enforcement officers who place themselves in harm’s way to protect the public. Tributes continue to pour in from across Ontario and beyond as colleagues, friends and community members prepare to say their final farewell to a young officer whose service ended far too soon.
