Historic Dragon Boat Festival on Kabul River Strengthens Pakistan-China Cultural Ties

PESHAWAR: Pakistan witnessed a historic cultural and sporting milestone as the country’s first-ever Dragon Boat Festival was successfully held on the Kabul River at Sardaryab, Charsadda, bringing together hundreds of athletes, government officials, Chinese guests, and thousands of spectators in a vibrant celebration of Pakistan-China friendship.

Organized by China Window, the Chinese cultural center based in Peshawar, the festival introduced one of China’s oldest and most cherished traditions to Pakistan on an unprecedented scale. The event transformed the banks of the Kabul River into a colorful display of culture, sports, and international friendship, marking a new chapter in people-to-people exchanges between the two countries.

The boat racing competition attracted more than 100 participants divided into several teams. Following a series of exciting races, the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Police team and the Charsadda team jointly secured first place, while the Sports Writers Association claimed second position and the Peshawar High Court team finished third.

The festival was attended by Special Assistant to the Chief Minister for Culture and Tourism Malik Adeel Iqbal, who served as chief guest. Provincial Ministers Fazal Shakoor and Akhtarullah Jan, Deputy Commissioner Charsadda Azmatullah Wazir, Additional Deputy Commissioner Ms. Rina Abbasi, Director Culture and Tourism Ms. Halima Iqbal, Rescue 1122 officials, elected representatives and senior government officers also participated in the event.

Thousands of spectators gathered along the riverbanks to witness the historic occasion. The colorful dragon boats, synchronized rowing, rhythmic drumbeats and enthusiastic cheering created an electrifying atmosphere throughout the competition.

The district administration implemented comprehensive security and safety measures, ensuring the smooth conduct of the festival. Adding to the festive environment, the Federal Constabulary Band performed musical pieces celebrating the enduring friendship between Pakistan and China, while FC personnel presented a traditional Khattak Dance performance that received an enthusiastic response from the audience.

One of the most notable aspects of the event was the active participation of women rowers. Organizers highlighted that this was the first time such a significant number of female athletes had taken part in a boat racing competition of this nature in the region, reflecting growing opportunities for women’s involvement in sports and cultural activities.

Chinese guests attending the festival praised the warm hospitality of the local community and expressed appreciation for the successful organization of the event. The festival was widely welcomed as a meaningful initiative promoting cultural understanding and strengthening bilateral ties between Pakistan and China.

At the conclusion of the competitions, trophies, medals and cash prizes were awarded to the winning teams. Addressing the gathering, Malik Adeel Iqbal commended China Window for its efforts in promoting cultural diplomacy and fostering closer relations between the people of both countries.

He said the successful organization of the Dragon Boat Festival on the Kabul River had projected a positive image of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and demonstrated the province’s potential as a destination for cultural tourism and international events. He also congratulated the organizers for hosting the festival during celebrations marking 75 years of diplomatic friendship between Pakistan and China and expressed hope that it would become a regular annual event.

China Window Administrator Amjad Aziz Malik described the festival as a landmark achievement in cultural exchange. He said the event had introduced an ancient Chinese tradition to Pakistan while creating new opportunities for friendship, understanding and cooperation between the people of the two nations.

He further announced that plans are being considered to make the Dragon Boat Festival a regular feature in the years ahead, allowing more people to experience the unique cultural heritage associated with the centuries-old Chinese tradition.
