The Pakistan Canada Association (PCA) Calgary is moving forward with an ambitious plan to establish a permanent “Pakistan House” in Calgary, a project community leaders describe as a historic milestone for the Pakistani Canadian community in Alberta.
Speaking exclusively with BW Times Calgary, well known community personality and PCA spokesperson Burhan Khan said that Pakistani communities across major Canadian cities already have their own community centers or Pakistan Houses where cultural, social, and community activities regularly take place. However, he noted that PCA Calgary is preparing to make history by developing a large scale Pakistan House and community complex on 10 acres of land in Rocky View County, with discussions already underway to acquire an additional 10 acres in the near future.
According to Khan, the proposed site is located just off Country Hills Boulevard in Rocky View County and is approximately 12 minutes away from the existing Pakistan House in Calgary, making it easily accessible for families and community members across the city and surrounding areas.
Khan said PCA Calgary has officially appointed a six member Land Development Committee to begin work immediately on planning and overseeing the future development of the project. According to the official appointment letter issued by PCA Calgary, the committee includes Khurshid Alam as Chairman, Habib Abdullah as Co Chair, Amir Habib Khan for Design and Logistics, Abrar Mangat for Consultation, and Irfan Akram for Development.
Providing details about the committee members, Burhan Khan said Khurshid Alam is a respected Calgary community member and developer who played an important role in helping PCA secure the land. Habib Abdullah previously served as President of PCA Calgary, while Amir Habib Khan is contributing his expertise as a designer and architect. Abrar Mangat, a civil engineer, along with Irfan Akram, are currently working on the initial stages of the development and coordinating with Rocky View County regarding approvals and planning matters.
Burhan Khan further explained that the proposed Pakistan House is envisioned as a modern and artistic community hub designed to serve future generations. Planned facilities may include a gymnasium, women’s shelter, senior housing, and affordable housing for low income families, along with space for cultural, educational, and community programs.
He said the organization has been working on acquiring and securing the land since 2010, and after years of effort, the property was officially transferred to PCA authority in 2017. The newly formed committee is also expected to work with different levels of government regarding funding opportunities and future development support.
Khan praised the efforts of PCA Calgary’s current leadership, stating that President Azhar Hunjra, Vice President Hassan Nawab, and General Secretary Noman Mushtaq are working tirelessly to unite the Pakistani community in Calgary and move the project forward.
Community members have described the initiative as a major step toward creating a permanent cultural and social landmark for Pakistani Canadians in Alberta, reflecting the growth, unity, and long term vision of the community.
