Calgary Fire Department crews responded to an early morning basement fire in the Thorncliffe area of northeast Calgary after an emergency call was received shortly before 3:00 a.m. on Monday, May 11, 2026.

The incident occurred in the 5400 block of Centre Street N.E., where residents reported a rapidly spreading fire in the basement of a home. Upon arrival, firefighters observed heavy smoke and visible flames coming from the rear of the property and immediately launched a fire attack while conducting search operations for occupants.

All residents were safely evacuated from the home after being alerted to the fire by one of the occupants. Emergency Health Services (EHS) paramedics assessed four individuals at the scene, with one person transported to hospital suffering from minor burns and smoke inhalation.

Crews also carried out multiple pet rescues from inside the structure. Three dogs and two cats were successfully saved and survived, however one dog and two cats died as a result of the fire.

Utility crews from Enmax and ATCO attended the scene to secure power and gas services, ensuring safety for responders and nearby residents.

A Calgary Fire Department investigator remained on site to determine the exact cause and origin of the fire, while crews continued overnight operations to ensure full extinguishment and prevent any rekindling.

Officials are again reminding residents of the importance of working smoke alarms, noting that in many house fires occupants may have as little as two minutes to escape once an alarm sounds. Fire safety guidance includes installing alarms on every level of the home, testing them monthly, and replacing units that are older than ten years or no longer functioning properly.

The investigation into the cause of the Thorncliffe basement fire remains ongoing.
