Calgary police are investigating a fatal shooting that took place in a grocery store parking lot in northeast Calgary on the evening of May 11, 2026, leaving one man dead and another in critical condition.

At approximately 7:50 p.m., emergency crews responded to reports of shots fired at the North Hill Co-op located at 520 16 Avenue N.E., where officers discovered two men suffering from gunshot wounds. Both victims were transported to hospital in life-threatening condition, however one of the men later died from his injuries.

Police confirmed that the suspects fled the scene before officers arrived and no arrests have been made at this time. Investigators believe the incident was targeted, and authorities have stated there is no ongoing risk to public safety.

The store was placed into lockdown during the initial response to protect staff and customers, which has since been lifted. While there are no active road closures, police have urged the public to avoid the area as investigative teams continue to examine the scene.

A spokesperson for the Calgary Police Service said the service recognizes the impact of violent incidents on the community and emphasized that public safety remains a top priority. Investigators are asking witnesses or anyone with dashcam or CCTV footage from the area at the time of the shooting to come forward.

Police continue to encourage community cooperation as part of broader efforts to address gun violence through enforcement, prevention, and ongoing investigations.
