From Somali Refugee to Lord Mayor: Yassin Mohamud Makes History in Bristol

Yassin Mohamud has been sworn in as the new Lord Mayor of Bristol, marking an inspiring milestone in a journey that began when he arrived in the United Kingdom as a refugee from Somalia.

Mohamud, a Green Party of England and Wales councillor representing Lawrence Hill since 2021, officially assumed the largely ceremonial but highly respected civic role at Bristol City Hall. He succeeds Henry Michallat.

In his first remarks after taking office, Mohamud emphasized the importance of unity, cooperation and support for all communities across Bristol. He said his mission is to help build a city where every resident has the opportunity to succeed, regardless of their background.

Mohamud moved to Bristol two decades ago to reunite with family members who were already settled in the city. He initially volunteered in the community, later earned a degree from University of Plymouth, and went on to serve in several public sector roles, including work with Bristol City Council.

Reflecting on his journey, Mohamud said the early years were challenging, with difficulties related to housing, education and employment. However, the guidance and support he received from local residents inspired him to dedicate his life to public service and community development.

As councillor for Lawrence Hill, one of Bristol’s most diverse and economically challenged areas, Mohamud has been recognized for advocating on behalf of residents, including his prominent role in assisting families affected by the evacuation of Barton House in 2023 following serious structural concerns.

The Lord Mayor of Bristol presides over full council meetings and represents the city at major civic occasions, including Remembrance Sunday and charitable initiatives such as the Lord Mayor’s Christmas Appeal for Children.

Mohamud said his appointment sends a powerful message to newcomers and refugees that they can achieve anything in their adopted home.

“They are no longer refugees; they are Bristolians,” he said, adding that they can grow to become doctors, engineers and even Lord Mayor.

His remarkable story stands as a testament to the values of inclusion, resilience and opportunity, and serves as an inspiration to communities across the United Kingdom and beyond.
